Last week I posed a question around the benefits of a Financial Systems Analyst gaining experience on different legal finance systems as they consider opportunities in which to progress their career. The resounding feedback was to avoid limiting your options by sticking only to the system you already know. The skills and experience required to progress to a leadership role within finance systems go far beyond your expertise in any specific tech, and gaining experience of a wider range of systems can be hugely beneficial. So – to flip this conversation on its head, how about from the hiring managers perspective? When hiring for an experienced Finance Systems Analyst or “Senior” in your current firm, how high an emphasis do you place on experience of a specific system? Of course, this will be an “it depends” scenario, but are there instances in which you might specifically seek out alternative systems backgrounds, or at least remain completely agnostic? And what other skills/attributes could be higher on the priority list?

For your next FC hire: - Focus on the value this person needs to add, not just the tasks they’ll do.? - Benchmark your offering to ensure you’re attracting the talent you need. - Work with a recruiter who knows the difference between “qualified” and “exceptional.” Having the right FC makes or breaks your finance function.
