Skunk Works - A Masterclass in Operating an Elite Team Skunk Works was the Navy Seals of the engineers, this secretive division of Lockheed Martin was a hallmark of innovation and advanced technology in aerospace. Lockheed Martin was a company ahead of its times: during the Cold War, they were able to create a plane that would fly at altitudes above 70,000 feet, well out of reach of the Soviet Union's fighters and surface-to-air missiles of that era WHILE being able to capture high-resolution images from significant distances. How could a company achieve such technological advancement compared to its peers? The answer is Skunk Works, a special division within the company where the magic happened. A team that emphasized speed, agility, and minimal bureaucracy. Their operations were led by a set of 14 principles which are worth reading and studying one by one: Rule 1: The Skunk Works manager must be delegated practically complete control of his program in all aspects. He should report to a division president or higher Rule 2: Strong but small project offices must be provided both by the military and industry Rule 3: The number of people having any connection with the project must be restricted in an almost vicious manner. Use a small number of good people (10% to 25% compared to the so-called normal systems) Rule 4: A very simple drawing and drawing release system with great flexibility for making changes must be provided Rule 5: There must be a minimum number of reports required, but important work must be recorded thorough Rule 6: There must be a monthly cost review covering not only what has been spent and committed but also projected costs to the conclusion of the program Rule 10: The specifications applying to the hardware must be agreed to well in advance of contracting. The Skunk Works practice of having a specification section stating clearly which important military specification items will not knowingly be complied with and reasons therefore is highly recommended Rule 11: Funding a program must be timely so that the contractor doesn't have to keep running to the bank to support government projects Rule 12: There must be mutual trust between the military project organization and the contractor, the very close cooperation and liaison on a day-to-day basis. This cuts down misunderstanding and correspondence to an absolute minimum Rule 13: Access by outsiders to the project and its personnel must be strictly controlled by appropriate security measures Rule 14: Because only a few people will be used in engineering and most other areas, ways must be provided to reward good performance by pay not based on the number of personnel supervised // Check out the full company deep dive on Lockheed Martin! Swan joined HyPrSpace over three years ago, and since then, he has been a cornerstone, a rock upon which HyPrSpace has continued to grow. ?? He describes himself as a "R&D engineer". And you'd be right to think: "Ahem... That doesn’t really tell us what he actually does!" In fact there isn't a better job title for him, because he's everywhere. But let's say that he works on the avionic side. More precisely, he is the link between mechanical engineering, propulsion, and avionics teams. His main tasks are: the development of the "Static Networked Controlled Fire," a highly reliable and real-time test bench control software, and contributing to the development of the embedded software stack. ??♂? Swan is hard to describe, but if we were to chose, we would say: ?? Passionate: he's able to discuss any subject for hours with the energy of the sun. If you ever have a question, he will come with an answer. ?? Multitasker: It's become a running joke here that Swan can juggle ten tasks at once while listening to a YouTube video at double speed. ?? Kind: Swan always looks out for everyone around him. If you're ever feeling down, he will notice and will do his best to cheer you up. ?? Crazy fun: He has that mad genius vibe that we love, it brings a lot of ambiance to our openspaces! Now... this hardly scratches the surface of who he is, but at least it gives you a glimpse. ?? I am looking for mechanics who deal with the diagnosis and repair of MERCEDES, MERCEDES CITARO, MAN LION buses on a daily basis. I am the author of an ON-LINE application supporting the work of mechanics of the above-mentioned brands, whose database provides technical support based on several thousand faults of various types. - engine equipment faults - faults in the electrical installation - door faults - air conditioning faults - WEBASTO auxiliary heating faults - suspension system faults - brake system faults - pneumatic system faults - etc... I would like to establish cooperation with mechanics who, in exchange for access to the application, will share their problems and thus additionally "feed" the application with new faults and their solutions. The application itself works on the principle: provide a description of the problem and you will receive a list of suggested solutions along with a list of necessary parts for possible replacement.
