Today, Ruth D. presented a mind-blowing session on her research and development of The Troll Project. It dives deeply into the hows, whys, and strategies of troll behavior to help us better understand people who choose to be disruptive in society, especially in communities like social VR, and how to respond and make our communities more inclusive.
She demonstrated the different avatars used by many trolls, and those used by those who are most likely to be trolled and attacked in VR. We discussed the pros and cons and the psychological impact of the avatars. It was fascinating when she used avatars based upon beloved characters like Kermit the Frog, familiar trolls from video games, and Troll Face were found to be uncomfortable for those unfamiliar with the cultural references, but enjoyed by those who did.
Understanding the psychology of avatar choices for all of us in virtual spaces, and recognizing when and if someone's choice is for deceptive, distracting, or evil purposes is more challenging that most of us expected.
