If I were hiring someone in tech sales right now, here are three things I would be looking for: - Are they able to articulate the importance of having multiple champions in any opportunity? Not only that, but do they understand that having champions in different parts of the business (e.g., procurement, legal, technical/IT/engineering) is highly advantageous? This ensures you have multiple advocates who are willing to sell on your behalf and who each derive unique value from your solution. - No fluff. It’s okay to be honest—you NEED that to forecast accurately. A fast “no” is much better than a slow “maybe” or, even worse, assuming a “yes” based on weak signals like, “Yes, we could see this being beneficial.” Ultimately, this comes down to whether they are willing to discuss deals where they failed and are open to being asked tough questions about the health of their deal. Aspirational pipeline is fine, but keep it clean. - They care about who they are today and how they can improve, not just who they were yesterday. This is huge. It’s not that the past is irrelevant—experience is key—but having someone on the team who values being present today and learning from failure is much more likely to succeed than the alternative. #sales
