What do you call a little green owl serving a master class on how to “do” thought leadership? Duolingo How do they get it SO right? Their leaders post thoughts - as compared to the brand posting a link to a “thought leadership” blog post. Why is this better? ??Authenticity - We get a far better understanding of the unique value of the tech and what the leader is dialed into as they continue to develop the tech. The leader can go deep on a topic they’re passionate about, even the highly technical science behind what makes Duolingo such an effective tool. This leads to trust, confidence and believability - quantifiable brand values for a pre or post IPO business. ??Brand gets to be brand. Duo gets to be Duo. Clever, hip, joyful and adorable, without compromising with the integrity of the thought leadership content. In terms of brand voice, I’m stumped on whether or not there’s better execution out there right now. So well done. ?? ??Performance - consistently I see the leader’s post coupled with Duo’s clever and on-brand quip, expanding the reach and engagement in the post and likely optimizing traffic and impact. A favorite brand to follow right now. Thanks for being awesome Duo. ????
One of our Duolingo operating principles is “test it first.” I love the sheer scale of our testing; we run hundreds of simultaneous A/B tests to find new ways to teach more effectively. We have tens of millions of learners (just under 30M daily active users last quarter) and we use innovative thinking and experimentation to improve how we teach. Whenever we make a change to the Duolingo app, small or big, we first test to make sure it doesn’t have a negative impact on our users or their ability to learn. We do the same for the course content, never making any change until it has been tested and shown to have positive effects on our learners’ progress. But today, I want to talk about a class of experiments that surprised me. A few years ago, we started a team called ? Delight ?. Delight was not tasked with improving our metrics; its purpose was to make the app more delightful. This can be anything from: ??Animating the explosions that appear when you answer a hard question.? ??Satisfying haptic feedback throughout your lesson ?Adding subtle sparkles across the app We didn’t expect these changes to have a positive effect on our numbers. But we tested them anyway. To our surprise, the animations do in fact keep people in the app longer and cause them to return to the app more often! ?Delight facilitates learning?, in ways we did not anticipate. Though we discovered that these animations *did* hurt the performance of one user segment: those who use Duolingo on lower-end devices. So we are able to turn off the more processing-intensive animations for these users to make sure their educational experience is not harmed ?? Another thing I love about our experiment-driven culture is how it facilitates collaboration. When a cross-functional team (made up of product, engineering, design and others) has to move a metric, they brainstorm together ?? come up with multiple ideas and hypotheses ?? test them to see what moves the needle ?? and iterate ?? If you are an engineer who wants to contribute meaningfully to education, with a strong sense of how products can be continuously improved, you’re one of us. Not sure if my daughter learned any quality French, but Duolingo had her engaged with their #Gamification strategies ????. How does it work? My daughter started using Duolingo to learn French for a trip we had. While she didn't end up learning much of the language, she stayed hooked on maintaining her streaks and earning badges. It’s a testament to the platform’s ability to keep users engaged, even if the results don't always align with the original goal. By making learning fun, Duolingo has mastered how to keep users coming back, increasing DAU and WAU. Duolingo’s $12B success story highlights the power of gamification to boost user engagement and retention. Key strategies include: - Streaks & Leaderboards: Encourage daily practice and friendly competition. - Badges & Progress Bars: Reward milestones and visualize progress. - Challenges & Social Features: Create urgency and foster community. #DigitalGrowth #Gamification #UserEngagement #GrowthHacking #DigitalBusiness #Growth #Digital #Retention

The partnership between Duolingo and Netflix for "Squid Game" Season 2 is a masterclass in connecting pop culture with education to captivate learners. As training professionals, we know the power of engagement and relevance in learning. Here's what we can take away from this partnership: 1?? Leverage Cultural Phenomena: By embedding "Squid Game"-themed content into Korean language lessons, Duolingo taps into learners' enthusiasm for the series. For us, this highlights the importance of tailoring content to what learners care about right now. 2?? Gamification and Motivation: The use of a TikTok filter for a voice-activated challenge adds a fun, interactive element that keeps users engaged. Incorporating gamified experiences can make training feel like play rather than work. 3?? Integrated Learning Experiences: Duolingo weaves show-specific phrases into its curriculum, blending entertainment with education seamlessly. We replicate this at Firebrand Training by embedding practical, real-world scenarios into our training programs. 4?? Data-Driven Insights: Duolingo reported a 40% increase in Korean learners following "Squid Game’s" release. Tracking trends and learner behaviours can guide us in designing timely and impactful programs. This collaboration reminds us that when learning connects with a learner’s passions, it transcends the classroom and becomes a part of their world. Let’s think about how we can align our training initiatives with current trends to create unforgettable learning experiences. #LearningAndDevelopment #Gamification #CulturalRelevance #EngagedLearning #TrainingInnovation

Duolingo brilliantly uses gamification to make language learning engaging and fun! With features like daily streaks, XP points, and leaderboards, it feels more like playing a game than studying. The app rewards users with virtual coins for achieving milestones and completing lessons, which can be spent in the Duolingo store. Adaptive challenges and levels keep learners motivated, while playful animations and instant feedback foster a positive experience. By turning education into a game, Duolingo keeps millions hooked on expanding their language skills daily. This innovative approach to learning is a game-changer! #EduTech #Gamification #LanguageLearning

I'm very disappointed in Duolingo's recent update to their XP system. Duolingo employs a heart system where users who make a mistake will lose a heart and must complete a practice lesson to gain back their heart. If you have no hearts, you cannot complete any new lessons. Subscription users do not have to use the heart system and. instead. their mistakes are stored in a separate mistakes section where users can opt to review them. Personally, I prefer the heart system even though it slows me down. I tend to read and answer very quickly and opt for the bigger penalty. I also am still looking for new work and even though I do think a Duolingo sub is worth the cost, it's one of many things I'm avoiding spending on. In the past, the review lessons were worth the same amount of XP as the progression lessons. The user wouldn't move forward nor could they trigger XP boosts but there were otherwise minimal competitive disadvantages of not having a subscription. However, a recent update has doubled the amount of XP given by the progressive lessons meaning that having to do practice lessons is now a significant disadvantage to competitive players who aren't paying for the service. This is an even bigger shame to be rolled out during the Diamond Tournament. There have always been competitive disadvantages to not subscribing but this one is very blatant. I find it disappointing because Duolingo's mission is to make learning "universally available." The leaderboards and XP system are part of the gamification motivations that help drive the learning. This design change therefor undermines their own mission. A simple solution that would still "nerf"—a game design term meaning to make less powerful—the practice session and non-paying players would be to not place non-paying users in the same leaderboard competition with subscribers. (The competition is already cohorted into 30 users who start gaining XP in their week at the same time). Ok that was a longer post than I expected it to be. Depending how my week goes, it might be converted into the upcoming #FeatureFriday lol #gamedesign #gamification #duolingo #leaderboards #subscription

Our VP of Product, Cem Kansu, breaks down what we deem as "the bar" for developing features that we ship to our learners. ?? By holding ourselves to high standards across these 4 key areas, we ensure that everything learners see is as delightful and useful as it can possibly be: ?? It’s easy and intuitive to use, for all learners, of all ages and all locations. We ask ourselves: would someone that installed their first mobile app?and lives in India understand how to use this feature? ?? It has a minimum viable amount of fun and delight. We are in the business of making learning fun, so our features always have to deliver fun and delight. This is subjective, and something we usually decide on a case-by-case basis. For example: a feature doesn't need to have polished animations to meet the bar, but it also shouldn’t have long instructional text tutorials. ?? Every pixel on the screen is carefully thought about. Consumer products live and die in the pixels. You’d never see a screen with a "back" button and a "X" button that do the same thing. ? It's consistent with the rest of the app. For example: challenges inside our lessons always fit in a single view and shouldn't scroll. And if you hit all 4, you’ve reached the bar! ?? Sound like a team you want to be a part of? Find all of our Product roles here: https://lnkd.in/eezZ_XmZ #duolingo #productmanagement

For nearly two years, I've been learning Arabic on Duolingo, and I've just hit a 700+ day streak! There have been times when I've felt, "this is long." But the gamification strategy kept me coming back. And just when I thought I’d lost my streak, I got a notification to freeze it. ?? Looking into gamification for our students, I've found that exploring how game-design elements can really transform anyone. It's been a long journey with Duolingo, and I still have a lot to learn. But each small step counts, and I'm committed to continuing. Day 1 Me: "Can I stick with this?" Day 700 Me: "You're still going!" Small daily efforts lead to big results. Which gamification app do you use that keeps you motivated? #Personaldevelopment #Education #Productivity? #EdTech
