I figured out what I don't like, and once I started my Ph.D., I was like, this is really cool. I'm from Turkey. I wanted to be a car designer, and that's why I chose to be a mechanical engineer. But then throughout my undergrad studies, I realized I didn't really like it. So I wanted to stay in academia, so I did my masters in mechanical engineering back in Turkey. When I was looking for Ph.D. positions, I saw an opening in bioprinting, and I was like, I'm going to try it. And that's how I moved to the US for my Ph.D., and I get to have a chance to combine my mechanical engineering experience with the new things that I was learning. And while I was doing my Ph.D., my goal was to stay in academia. And then I realized, maybe there is a better way to help patients now, to become a bridge between academia and industry. So I was looking for positions after I graduated, and I saw this job description from Wyss and I thought, wow, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm a biofabrication engineer. In our project, we're trying to create vascularized tissue constructs to help mostly breast cancer patients who lost, their breasts during the mastectomy, because the current solutions are not ideal. I feel like I was lucky to be surrounded by people who are experts in their own fields. It's just very important to integrate those expertises. You can't know everything by yourself. If you reach out to people, ask questions, listen to their expertise, that's how you're going to make progress. Even though when you're struggling through that, you feel like you're not going anywhere. But if you put enough time and effort in something, you're actually going to move forward because there's nowhere else to go.
