Picture this: my first job out of the gate was at the Nelson Mandela Institute for Rural School. Fresh off my stint as the first female President of the SRC at Fort Hare University, I was ready to dive into the world of innovative thinking with this stellar team. And oh, what a ride it was! Now, let me take you back to one unforgettable adventure. We were on a mission to visit schools in the rural heartland, and boy, did we encounter some wild scenes. Deep in the forests of Mqanduli, we stumbled upon a school that was, well, more of a jungle gym than an actual building. Prefab structures were the name of the game, but this particular one had a surprise in store: asbestos. Yes, you heard that right – the stuff of nightmares straight out of an Erin Brockovich flick. But wait, it gets better (or worse, depending on your perspective). As we cautiously ventured into the classrooms, we learned that the real danger wasn't just the asbestos – it was the snakes. Apparently, these slithery friends liked to cozy up in the insulation when things got toasty in the afternoons. Needless to say, our interviews were cut short as we high-tailed it out of there faster than you can say "snake charmer." Jokes aside, that experience sparked a fire in me to question the very foundation of our education system. Are we really equipping our kids with the tools they need to conquer the world? Are we making the most of our resources to ensure meaningful learning experiences? These are the questions that keep me up at night – and I'm betting I'm not alone. So, where are the leaders with the big ideas? Who's ready to shake things up and ensure that every child has access to quality education? The clock is ticking, and it's high time we start hearing some answers. Are you with me? ?? #BTWYRU #Voting #education #EducationRevolution #InnovativeLeadership #SnakesInSchools

At Tees Valley Education we regularly use the phrase that 'expertise does not grow in silos' This is especially true when it comes to understanding tackling educational inequality through policy, partnerships and place. So, a particular thank you to a number of organisations that have worked with us this week (and beyond). We value your collaboration! Cramlington Village Primary School - we look forward to supporting your thinking and work on poverty-informed practice in due course. Evidence Based Education - for sharpening our curiosity and for digging deep into the complexity of poverty-informed practice with us. More collaboration on the way! Chartered College of Teaching - for continuing to strengthen our teams and help us to grow our partnerships. We are especially thankful to Dame Alison Peacock DL, DLitt for her personal contributions this week. Royal Grammar School Newcastle John Smith for working closely with us and preparing the place-based collective for next week. We are genuinely excited about the next phase of this work with you. Fair Education Alliance for preparing us ready for the #FEASummit in a couple of weeks. The largest gathering of educators and thinkers on this very agenda in the UK. Thanks for the opportunities. ITV Sarah Corker for working closely with us on shining a light on the complex and demanding challenges facing our communities. Your due diligence and care with this has been greatly appreciated. SHINE Trust for supporting our professional development through SSE Action Learning. A genuine opportunity for us to step back from the demands of day-to-day challenges and think strategically about some tough challenges in the education landscape. #Partnership #Practice #People #Policy #Place

An interesting new study has been released in northeast Indiana regarding postsecondary education. The standout data to me is... "Barriers identified in the report include increased skepticism of higher education, with 84% of Hoosiers believing it is too expensive and 60% questioning the value of a degree." The study included a number of recommendations, but I am wondering if any will lead to individuals finding degrees to have value? Perhaps another study could include information of what workforce participants value, what universities value, and what employers value... call me crazy, but I am betting that these three things will not align. While automation is advancing quickly, it far too utopian to believe that it will be a solution for any of our immediate community concerns. The current whipsaws of cheap and expensive labor are producing historic effects on our society as a whole. It is doubtful that our educational institutions will be exempt, and more than likely those who thrive through this period will need to radically alter the way they engage their stakeholders.
The #MyNEI team attended the Don Wood Foundation and Questa Education Foundation press conference where they discussed their newly released findings from an intensive study focused on their Achieving Postsecondary Attainment initiative. The 165-page Advancing Postsecondary Education and Training Study is the first phase of a broader effort. It focused on Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Grant, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells and Whitley counties.
