90% of us routinely recycle — so why does so much of our rubbish still end up in landfill? MattRudd interviews Helen Holmes in this article which explores our current 'rubbish' recycling rates (honourable exemption for Wales!). Helen's research with the #OneBin project shows that consumers usually want to 'do the right thing' but are hampered by inconsistent, confusing or inadequate recycling systems. With new, simplified, systems in the pipeline, there is hope that consumers will be able to recycle more, helping councils reduce waste and generate more income from recycling. https://lnkd.in/ecVuuJ48 The University of Manchester School of Social Sciences

Ready for an inside scoop on how TerraCycle recycles hard-to-recycle trash? When our TerraCyclers recycle with TerraCycle, their trash will always end up at one of our TerraCycle material recovery facilities (MRFs). Then, the magic happens… Once the trash is checked in, it’s sorted and cleaned before it is recycled into raw materials. Those raw materials are then used to make new items like benches, watering cans, shipping pallets, and more—giving hard-to-recycle trash a whole new life!

How can we take #reuse and #repair mainstream? ?? That was the question that Bryson Recycling came to us with as it looked at whether it made sense to establish a large-scale reuse park in North Wales. Our research shone a light on the possibilities and opportunities available to them, which will help Bryson Recycling support the #BeyondRecycling?commitments in Wales and help the local authorities they serve to significantly increase the scale of reuse in the region. You can read more about this (and our other work) in our 2023-24 #impactreport (link in comments below).

More than 1,000 children have been given lessons about what can go into their recycling bins in a bid to save the local council money. Non-recyclable waste in blue bins currently costs Doncaster Council more than £300,000 a year to sort, it said. Special lessons educating children in Rossington have been taking place. They came as a new council project, run in partnership with waste partner SUEZ UK , meant bins would be left unemptied if they contained non-recyclable material. Primary schools including St Joseph's, Grange Lane, St Michael's, Pheasant Bank and Torndale Infants, were all visited as part of the scheme. A good way for children to pick up good recycling habits at an early age, which is something they can take home with them, discuss with their parents and all make a difference to increase recycling, whilst reducing contamination. We are the the ATX landfill today. Learning how a landfill operates; business model behind it; geology and engineering that supports it. It’s more complex and thought through than what we generally assume when we think landfill! #nextgeneration #recycledmaterials #lesswaste #landfill WM
A smile and the will to knock on doors unannounced is a gamble. And as an entrepreneur you know it could go either way. But when it works out. New and genuine relationships form and you learn stuff that blows your mind. Thank you Jessica Bivone & Jesse Andrade for the tour today of the WM Austin Community Landfill. I learned a lot. And confirmed much of what we suspected and already knew was true: recycling is broken. But also, landfills are there because we produce the waste in the first place. It’s not the landfill that needs to look in the mirror. You and I do. #recycling #recyclingisbroken #reducewaste #landfills #austin #austintx #zerowastecity #partnershipsoftomorrow

Talkin’ trash @ ecomaine ?? | Passionately promoting sustainable waste management as a means to a better future
???? Big news in the recycling world! Knowledge is power and data is the key to better understanding existing programs and identifying opportunities for improvement in recycling systems and waste management practices. Thrilled to see The Recycling Partnership's new Community Recycling Program Acceptance Data tool. The National Recycling Database (https://lnkd.in/g8gaYCn5) provides updated insights into what materials are accepted in recycling programs across the U.S., helping improve packaging design, policy, and recycling efficiency. With harmonization of definitions and more clarity about the key differences in recycling acceptance, the data will help to better inform how GreenBlue Org's How2Recycle? (H2R) communicates the recyclability of packaging to consumers - often a huge point of confusion and one our team at ecomaine puts thousands of hours each year into educating our communities about. Check out more about this amazing initiative here: https://lnkd.in/gujAV5ww Never before has there been as much innovation and new technologies being brought forward to propel advancements in the recycling industry. Let’s keep pushing for a stronger, greener future together! #ecomaine #SustainableFuture #RecyclingInnovation
Today, through a joint initiative with GreenBlue Org, The Recycling Partnership released its U.S. Community Recycling Program Acceptance Data for the very first time. Powered by The Partnership’s comprehensive National Recycling Database, the newly released Acceptance Data provides the most-up-to-date information on which materials are accepted in recycling programs across the nation.
