Food banks in the City of Ottawa / Ville d’Ottawa are struggling to serve vulnerable populations amid increased demand. As a volunteer with St. Joe's Supper Table operating out of St. Joseph's Parish - Ottawa, I'm witnessing this firsthand. ?? St. Joe's Supper Table is the only food bank serving Sandy Hill residents with a well-earned reputation for being Ottawa's smallest food bank with a big impact and an even bigger heart. We're seeing an unprecedented increase in people accessing our services. In 2023, 60% of registrations were from new households.?A total of 1,111 individuals registered at the food bank in 2023, up from 728 registrations in 2022: a 53% increase. The number of visits to the food bank have been steadily increasing from 2023 to 2024. In May 2023, 267 individuals accessed the food bank. In May 2024, there were 529 individuals, including newcomers, university students and folks with full-time jobs. There's an urgent need for specific food items like coffee, sugar and canned meat, as well as baby diapers and menstrual products. ?? The Supper Table's manager, Kathleen Strader, spoke with 580 CFRA's Patricia Boal this morning about the challenges the food bank is currently facing and our upcoming Autumn Fundraiser.
