?? 60 million drone flights expected by 2043 ?? Over the last five years, we have seen a significant maturing of the drone industry in Australia and globally. Advancement of technologies and ingenuity of use cases is driving greater adoption of drone use across Australia. We recently commissioned Scyne Advisory to analyse growth of the drone and advanced air mobility market (including air taxis) in Australia to inform Airservices’ delivery of capabilities that will underpin Australia’s uncrewed aircraft systems traffic management (UTM) ecosystem – including the Flight Information Management System (FIMS). ? The report predicts that commercial drone flights will increase by an average of 20% per annum over the next 20 years – culminating in 60 million flights in 2043. ? The growth in flights will be driven primarily by the transport and logistics industry – around 50 million flights (77% of total flights in 2043). It is estimated that the current number of drone flights last year were around 1.5 million. Growth will be focused in densely populated areas, driving the need for an operational UTM to maintain safe and equitable access to shared airspace. ?? Using #VTOL cargo #drones to transport successfully goods from Malpensa Airport ???? to a logistics centre ?? On the night of 8/9 July, a first set of test flights was carried out using drones with vertical take-off and landing (#VTOL) capabilities to fly cargo from the airport's Cargo City to Barbarini & Foglia's logistics warehouse. The flights were conducted by Technosky using a NIMBUS cargo drone model performing an 8 km round trip twice, and transporting a small payload. The flights continued the following night, departing from the same starting point and flying 7km to the SEBI logistics warehouse. ?? The goal of the flight trials? To test this innovative transport mode enabled by U-space U1 and U2 services, in this case provided by D-flight, and without affecting manned aviation operations ??. The trials will contribute to potentially launching large-scale drone cargo delivery services in the future - a step forward that would bring key benefits such as ?? faster delivery times ?? lower CO2 emissions vs road transport A new round of flights operated by Telespazio with Dronus and other operators are scheduled for Autumn 2024. The flights were performed as part of the Italian Demonstration Cluster (led by ENAV, the ???? #ANSP) of the U-ELCOME DSD Project, in which SEA Milan Airports is coordinating the Milan Sandbox. SEA Milan Airports collaborates with the Italian partners of the project (ENAV, D-flight, EuroUSC Italia, Telespazio, TECHNO SKY, NIMBUS, NAIS and Dronus) in planning and developing the flight campaigns, and with ENAC for the regulatory aspects, the flight authorisations and the implementation of the Milan Sandbox. The U-ELCOME project, coordinated by #EIH the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub, aims to accelerate the implementation of U-space services across Europe. The project has received funding from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) under the #CEF Connecting Europe Facility in cooperation with the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking as one of its flagship Digital Sky Demonstrators (#DSDs).
