San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's newest residents are un-bear-ably cute! ?? San Diegans can now visit Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, the first pandas to be sent to the U.S. in more than two decades as a gesture of goodwill from China. San Diego's scientific expertise has made it the perfect place to host these adorable animals: The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance was the first in the U.S. to establish a cooperative panda conservation program, and its researchers have made significant contributions to our scientific understanding around nurturing the species. ?? We are so lucky at Species360 to get to work with conservation professionals who care for animals all around the world! Day in and day out, that 'data management' work goes on mostly outside of the public's eye. Starting today you can see the impact of our communities ex situ management on the IUCN's #Redlist species information pages. Lower down on the page you will see a new 'External Data' section - have a look at your favorite species and see how far the #ZIMS data network reaches! #DataSavingSpecies #ServingConservation
Species360 is thrilled to announce that key species population data from the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) has been added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species! By integrating Species360 ex situ data into the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species website, the Red List will now provide a complete image of species population numbers in the wild and in human care, promoting the One Plan Approach to conservation. This would not be possible without the Species360 members worldwide, who record species data every day. Species360 would like to extend a special thanks to the following organizations for their generous support, which made this project a reality: Association Fran?aise des Parcs Zoologiques - AFdPZ, Brookfield Zoo Chicago, K?lner Zoo, Zoo Vienna Sch?nbrunn, Walter Zoo AG Gossau, Zoo Schwerin, Zoo Wuppertal, Zoo Zürich. ?? International Red Panda Day ?? Today we give extra attention and much needed support to the original panda: the red panda (Ailurus fulgens)! They are fascinating for many reasons: ?? They have carnivore's teeth and short digestive system, but feed on almost exclusively plant-based diet. ?? Red pandas have a unique wrist that allows them to climb down the tree head-first. ?? For my IT connections, THIS is the animal represented on the 'Firefox' logo and not a 'fox'. Sadly, red pandas are classified as Endangered, primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation, but also poaching, and the illegal wildlife pet trade. To support the conservation of this charismatic species, please consider supporting the work of a local conservation organisation, and/or the one working on protecting the red panda in-situ (meaning in their natural habitat). The time has come to reflect on the inappropriate names we use for many of our unique Australian wildlife, let us move on from european terms of rats and mice and embrace their traditional names that reflect their uniqueness and importance. This article makes some great recommendations, my suggestion Tarkawara (Notomys alexis) (Pitjantjatjarra/Yankunytjatjarra) https://lnkd.in/gjADP_Kp

How can we broaden wildlife trade discussions so that they better represent the diversity of species that are traded? Our new Special Issue, Beyond Charismatic Megafauna in Illegal Wildlife Trade, has some suggestions and is out today in Conservation Biology! After more than a year of work to put this together with my fellow guest editors Dr Jared Margulies (University of Alabama Department of Geography and Dr. Alice C. Hughes (The University of Hong Kong) we ended up with 21 papers from more than 125 authors on a wide range of wildlife trade issues associated with a lot of different taxonomic groups. There are original research articles, reviews and perspective pieces looking at broad issues associated with multiple species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fungi and small mammals, as well as papers on more specific trade issues associated with cacti and succulents, carnivorous plants, crayfish, hornbills, parrots, sea snakes, snails, seahorses, totoaba, tarantulas, and turtles. The issue will be fully open access (most of it is already!) and can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e7uAzU-u Oxford Martin School Department of Biology, University of Oxford

Black-winged mynas hold the first position of the Conservation priority list of the IUCN SSC Asian Songbird Trade Specialist Group suffering greatly from the illegal cage-bird trade. ?? This involves exchanging animals between them, breeding and many more activities. ?? The roles of EEPs are defined by experts from the zoo community with their partners from the field and are gathered in a Regional Species Plan. Currently EAZA manages EEPs for over 500 different species. I always think species IUCN listed as "Extinct in the Wild" have some of the most inspiring stories - their existence almost totally wiped out, save for people seeing the storm clouds on the horizon and taking emergency action to prevent their total loss from the planet. It can be a difficult knowing how much effort/resource to put into ex-situ (captive breeding etc) vs. in-situ (habitat creation etc) measures for species, and it's a debate that also happens at the UK scale when trying to recover some of our most threatened wildlife. If possible, I always advocate for a dual "plan for the best but prepare for the worst" approach. For extinction critical species focus on addressing the issues acting on the species in-situ as much as possible, but have the "safety net" of captive breeding programmes or ark sites, just in case in-situ measures fail and the worst happens. Who knows, 40 years down the line they may be our only way of bringing a species back to the wild...
