The day aims to increase public understanding of these diseases, highlight the importance of early detection, and emphasize the critical need for bone marrow and stem cell donations. It also serves as a platform to support patients and their families, advocating for advancements in treatment and research. Do you know the history of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society? Please take a moment to learn more about the organization. Hope Rises from Loss The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) was born out of a family's grief following the death of their teenage son. Robert "Robbie" Roesler de Villiers, son of a well-to-do New York family, was only 16 when he quickly succumbed to leukemia in 1944. Five years later, frustrated by the lack of effective treatments for what was then considered a hopeless disease, parents Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers started a fundraising and education organization in their son's name. Headquartered in a small Wall Street office, the Robert Roesler de Villiers Foundation had only a few volunteers and a tiny budget. The task was daunting. Most leukemia patients, especially children, died within three months. Even by the mid-1950s, when the first-generation chemotherapy drugs began appearing, the disease remained a stubborn challenge. The Foundation reported in its 1955 annual report: "As of this date, Leukemia is 100% fatal. This is almost a unique situation among the many diseases to which man is susceptible." Driven by the de Villiers' nearly boundless belief that leukemia and other blood cancers were indeed curable, the Foundation grew steadily, opening its first chapters in the New York City area. The organization, after changing its name to The Leukemia Society, was renamed The Leukemia Society of America in the 1960s to communicate a broad, national reach. Dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other blood cancers, we are now The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the world's largest voluntary (nonprofit) health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Since 1949, we’ve invested nearly $1.7 billion in groundbreaking research, pioneering many of today’s most innovative approaches. We work tirelessly to find cures and ensure patients can access the lifesaving treatments they need. When someone experiences the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis, we provide hope, compassion, education and support. And we are making an impact in the cancer community. Last night, my colleagues and I participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night event in Indianapolis. LLS provides vital support for research, patients, and caregivers of those conquering blood cancer. Despite the bluriness, this image from the event shows a few white lights held by those who are surviving or have survived blood cancer. The other colors are held by those who have lost friends and family to blood cancer. Easily a 1:30 ratio. It made me think: How can we flip this ratio in upcoming years so that we have many more white lights of survivors and fewer lights for those who lost their battle with blood cancer? Innovation is a critical part of achieving this flip. Survivors shared their stories, and all of them highlighted the innovative medicines that have extended their lives. However access to these innovations is equally essential for positive outcomes; we know too many patients face barriers that often prevent access to innovative medicines. Moving the needle towards better outcomes for cancer patients suffering from fatigue. It is an honor and privilege to help patients achieve improvements in quality of life through my research with The Lymphoma Coalition. I am pleased to share that LC’s manuscript, "Cancer Related Fatigue and the Additive Effect of Treatment in the Context of Lymphoma: An Analysis of the Lymphoma Coalition’s 2022 Global Patient Survey," has been accepted for publication in AACR's new journal, Cancer Research Communications. Cancer related fatigue is a highly incident phenomenon in lymphoma that can be ascribed to a combination of causes. We have demonstrated substantial variability across various subtypes of lymphoma and have estimated that nearly half of the reported fatigue comes from treatment. The study highlights the significant variability in cancer-related fatigue across different lymphoma subtypes and emphasizes the importance of increased screening and monitoring. By addressing fatigue more effectively, we can enhance the quality of life for patients and improve health outcomes. To read the full manuscript visit:?https://lnkd.in/gCdmFkbs
