Your viewers are getting bored of your content! Social media users have incredibly short attention spans. You got 3 seconds to attach your viewer watching rest of the video, but this is not it anymore, you gotta give more. Anyways, how do you fix the problem to "your viewers getting bored?" Steal my million views strategy: Change shots every 2-3 seconds: - Keep the visuals fresh. - Motions keeps viewers glued to the screen. Always! Its time to move on from steady shots. Close-ups and wide shots: - Each have stories! Google it. - Alternate between these to add variety. There's no way you're winning unless you don't know this, Incorporate fast-paced editing: - Cut between different scenes quickly. - This keeps the energy high and maintains interest. Basically retention is what you need, this whole post is about how your content gets retention, keep reading.. Transitions: - Smooth/seamless transitions between shots will maintain flow while, - keeping the visual interesting. Cmon! Of course your video is gonna be interesting to you. Watch it again from a perspective of person who has no idea who you are, and doesn't care about what this content is about, how much efforts you gave and who are you to them. Why should someone spend their valuable fast running time watching your content? Plan your shots: - Before filming, decide on the angles and shots you want to use. - if its edit, start with the story, move on to creating an organised folder with all the overlays you want to add, and then get to edit. - This will make editing easier and save hell lot of time faster. Use jump cuts: (yes this is transition too) - These are quick cuts between shots of the same scene. - They add intensity and speed to your Reel. Add text overlays: - Highlight key points with text. - Adds information + keeps the visual interesting. A legendary tip: is your video still attractive when muted? Is it understandable? Make it understandable to those who may watch it even on mute, and to those who doesn't even understand your language. This is a win win. Utilize sound effects: - Sync your edits with sound effects or music beats. - Viewers find it hard to ignore rhythm. - while visuals are important, sound design has become equally important. Do this easy test, make a video with no sound effects and keep the music, and one with sound effects included, if sfx are suitable and perfect for the video, you'd make 2x of reach. Always keep experimenting, and you’ll see the difference in viewer engagement. Thanks for your attention. I once walked in on my roommate in Uni watching a Korean movie with headphones. I remember laughing so hard that my belle began to hurt. I couldn't fathom it, I kept on asking her "Why are you using a headphone when you don't even understand what they are saying". Her response: "It helps me feel all the emotions in the movie" Years later, I came to realise that Sound is not just a powerful tool in movies but also in visual content marketing. Generally, sound possesses the alchemical power to stir up emotions and transport viewers to different realms. It does not matter if the language spoken is familiar to us or not, Sound brings us unity in emotions. Why then do visual content marketers pay less attention to Sound design? The very least we do is ask for "an upbeat sound" (If I got a dollar for every time I heard that during my agency days????). It is true that people's attention span is short but with the right Sound?? Attention span takes the back sit. I would always give flowers to the old Nollywood crew. The one way they knew to create suspense was with Sound, and boy did they do a good job at it. No doubt we see it in "New Nollywood" but... Why then is it different for branded visual contents? We must understand that sound design goes beyond mere background music or effects, it is an unforseen force that elevates a visual narrative. Selecting the right Sound elements is akin to composing a symphony. Each sound must harmonize with the visuals to amplify and enrich the storytelling experience. So when next you are creating that visual ad, give a little more attention to Sound design. Might I even suggest creating a mix of your own sound as opposed to scrolling through royalty free sites??♀?
