As Christians, we are committed to upholding the dignity of every human life, as made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This fundamental belief compels us to address one of the most pressing moral issues of our time: the forced displacement of people. We are grateful for President Trump’s commitment to ensuring that our nation’s borders are strong and secure. We also appreciate and affirm his recent call to ensure systems so that immigrants “with love for the country” are able “to come in legally.” In 2017, in President Trump’s first week of his first term in office, he issued an executive order revising the ceiling for refugee admissions at least 50,000, and we urge him to once again set the ceiling for refugee admissions at that level or higher, consistent with his commitments both to secure borders and to religious liberty and opportunity for all. We invite you to add your voice to the plea for justice, support, and hope for those displaced. Learn more and sign the statement by visiting https://lnkd.in/gTqe5Ed6

In collaboration with Open Doors USA, we recently published a report called The State of the Golden Door: Persecuted Christians and the U.S. Refugee Resettlement and Asylum Processes. This report explores how changes in U.S. immigration policy have impacted persecuted Christians worldwide. At World Relief, we believe all people have the right to religious freedom, and that religious minorities of any sort — not just those who share our Christian faith — should be protected. In this discussion, Fr. Rob Galea explores the complex issue of refugees, emphasizing the Catholic Church's teachings on welcoming the stranger while acknowledging the challenges that arise from immigration and the tension between compassion and security. He reflects on the biblical perspective of refuge, the importance of human dignity, and the moral dilemma of balancing protection with openness. The conversation also addresses the societal responsibilities and the need for individual sacrifice to support those in need, while questioning the role of governments and communities in resolving this global crisis. https://lnkd.in/gKQri9Yw

@ RESEARCHING INTERNAL DISPLACEMENT, we've just published this highly topical new Working Paper by Dr Guita Hourani on "Turbulent Borders, Displaced Lives: The Christian Narrative in South Lebanon’s Geopolitical Landscape" - https://lnkd.in/ew7npBfQ This working paper contextualizes the internal displacement of more than 94,000 individuals from South Lebanon amid the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel following Hamas's "Al-Aqsa Deluge" operation in October 2023. It investigates the causes of displacement, particularly within the Christian community, by analyzing various push factors deriving from the activities of the Israeli military, Hezbollah and the Lebanese government. Drawing on these factors, the article ascertains a seven-fold survival narrative among South Lebanon's Christians: unwavering faith, coping resilience, distancing from Christian partisan rhetoric, avoiding confrontation, rejecting the war, advocating for coexistence as a fundamental social covenant and reaffirming allegiance to Lebanon and its Armed Forces. The article concludes by emphasizing the need to cease the conflict; hold the perpetrators accountable and ensure reparation for the civilians affected by the war; ensure the right to assisted return; guarantee the rights of individuals not to be displaced; and replace Hezbollah’s power formula –?the Army, the People, and the Resistance equation. Editor’s Note:?The research in this article predates the 2024 September entry of Israeli forces into Lebanon, but remains relevant as the violence between Hezbollah, the Israeli military and Lebanese forces escalates. The border communities discussed in this paper face even greater challenges, and the article’s themes of survival and resolution are even more critical today. #Lebanon #Israel #internaldisplacement #IDPs #Christians #borders #communities Researching Internal Displacement Refugee Law Initiative Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies, School of Advanced Study Steven Miron Sarah Maduri Guita Hourani, Ph.D. Specialist in Migration and Citizenship

The International Institute of New England (IINE) condemns the recent escalation in xenophobic and racist narratives about Haitian asylum seekers and refugees. Political opinions and the freedom to express them does not justify violent rhetoric. The community of Springfield, Ohio, has been terrorized by bomb threats and other violence spurred on by false claims and accusations from politicians who hope to hold the highest offices in our nation. These are not the morals of Americans who in our experience want to welcome newcomers in communities across the country. The nation is watching how Massachusetts responds to this rhetoric. Let’s remind the country that we are a nation of immigrants, and we are stronger because of our rich diversity. At IINE, we echo Ohio Governor DeWine’s recent comments. “Springfield has a rich history of providing refuge for the oppressed and being a place of opportunity... The Springfield I know is not the one you hear about in social media rumors. It is a city made up of good, decent, welcoming people. They are hard workers — both those who were born in this country and those who settled here.” — Ohio Governor DeWine in The New York Times. Join Haitians of Boston and countless organizations working alongside Haitian immigrants to show the Haitian community and the nation that we welcome newcomers here in Massachusetts. #JusticeforHaiti #yestoUnity #YestoSolidarity #YestoJustice #SolidaritywithHaitianimmigrants?#ImmigrantsWelcome #welcomehaitians #haitianswelcome

???? A Refuge, or a Nightmare? The Disturbing Struggle of Diab Talal and Amal Sheikho after Seeking Safety through the UN Refugee Resettlement Program In 2017, Diab Talal and his wife, Amal Sheikho, sought safety in Sweden after fleeing the horrors of war through the UN's refugee resettlement program. But instead of peace, they faced a heartbreaking reality. ?? Swedish social services, acting on a neighbor's complaint of alleged child abuse, permanently removed their four children from them — despite the investigation filed on case finding no evidence of abuse. In 2021, their fifth child was taken immediately after Amal underwent labor! Now, separated from their children and targeted in the media, labeled as "Islamists and terrorists", Amal and Diab are left fighting a seemingly endless battle for their family, and children. Critical questions are raised about the treatment of immigrant families in Sweden due to this case, and others like it; urging us to investigate the intended reasons of such disturbingly forceful, unjust policies.
