For anyone who wants to better understand the implications of the 180-something pages of the English Devolution White Paper released by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, this is a good summary. *a wee bit of context* One of the longstanding complaints about England’s governance model has been how much power is concentrated in Whitehall. It began changing when the Greater London Authority Act 1999 was passed and gave way for the rest of England’s regions to eventually have devolved powers. And today, the White Paper takes it a step further. My favourite part of the paper is a single line: ‘Devolution will no longer be agreed at the whim of a Minister in Whitehall, but embedded as a default into our country’s constitution’. That’s an exceptional shift in attitude towards the normalisation of Devolution in England from Westminster. And I doubt there’d be much opposition to this or a possibility of a reversal from a future government. It’s a lot to take in, but it’s nice to see red tapes intended to be cut such as the Secretary of State's consent for constructing cattle grids and converting footpaths to cycle tracks permanently. A good few years before we fully see this play out but it certainly looks promising. #Devolution #LocalGovernment #England

Tangier Island, Virginia, has been slowly disappearing under water. Rising sea levels have eaten up two-thirds of the territory since 1850. Residents of the island sell t-shirts declaring "I refuse to be a climate change refugee," rejecting the narrative that global heating is responsible. Scientists predict Tangier will be uninhabitable within decades, while residents attribute their crisis to "God-made erosion." Drawing from 5 years as a coordinator of the Critical Policy Studies Network, this article unpacks the complex sub-networks of scholars working on diverse critical (and interpretive) policy domains to see the non-conventional policy landscape.
