I can't tell you how honored I am to have secured one of the 100 in-person seats at this year's CWI Equity Summit 2024. Each year, the Center for Workforce Inclusion and CWI Labs convene more than 1,000 employers, decision-makers, influencers, policymakers, and practitioners for a unique opportunity – to discuss the economic imperative of an age-inclusive workforce. Older Americans have a labor force participation rate of only 38% and a long-term unemployment rate of 28%. And these numbers only worsen for older adults in traditionally underrepresented communities. Unlike other workforce conferences, the Summit focuses exclusively on solutions to the systemic obstacles that prevent our nation from achieving a fully inclusive workforce. What are you grateful for this week? Some things I'm extremely grateful for this week: 1. I am a part of a Recruiting Team that I am extremely proud of. The work that we are doing to continue pushing the envelope of Candidate Experience and hiring process leadership is just ... ?? Haley Armstrong, M.Ed., CTR, Liz Cotreau, and Kristi Waeltz, CTR ... thank you for all you do and for all the ways you make me a better human! 2. We JUST hired a new Senior Recruiter for our Puerto Rico office and I can't wait to see what they bring to the table! We have a lot planned for that community and it's going to be so exciting watching that come to fruition. 3. Talent Acquisition Week is NEXT WEEK! If you're in the TA space and going ... RecFest USA was an absolute blast! A great event full of energy, amazing people, and a vibe that made it hard not to get caught up in the excitement. This photo? It’s not my favorite shot, but it reflects how I felt about the entire experience.??I was ready to dive in, focused, and determined to make connections that matter. I went with a purpose: to meet as many people as I could, and I’m proud to say I achieved that. Every conversation was an opportunity to share insights, swap ideas, and discuss the future of work. At ZRG Embedded Recruiting/RPO , we’re doing important work in talent acquisition, and RecFest reinforced just how crucial it is. We allow companies to grow their teams without the unnecessary overhead, focusing on strategic partnerships that elevate the hiring process. I watched a clip of Glen Powell this weekend, who has seen his career absolutely take off the past few years (link to clip in the comments). In the clip, he talks about auditioning for the role of Rooster in Top Gun, which as you know, he did not get (shout out to Miles Teller). When Glen found out that he didn't get the role, he was crushed. Tom Cruise called him and asked if he'd be open to still being in the movie, to which Glen Powell said he wasn't sure it was worth it. Glen agreed to sit down with him though, and in that conversation Tom asked him what kind of career he wanted. Glen said that he wanted a career like his. He wanted to be the greatest of all time. Tom then asked him if he knew how Tom got there, to which Glen said, "Yeah, you choose great roles." Tom responded: "No, I choose great movies and I make the roles great." It changed Glen's perspective entirely. He ended up doing Top Gun, made his supporting role great, and has since landed several amazing roles/movies (including Twisters, which I saw on Friday and highly recommend). I love this story. Reminds me of Sheryl Sandberg's quote: "If you're offered a seat on a rocket ship, don't ask what seat!?Just get on." I remember being offered an internship at Uber back in 2016. This was peak Uber hype, Travis Kalanick was still at the helm, and the business was on an absolute tear. I would have accepted a job cleaning the bathrooms at Uber if it meant the chance to learn and observe that company. Thankfully, I got to do more than that and work with several incredible people. Just that one experience has impacted by career tremendously. As you evaluate career opportunities, do everything you can to work with exceptional people building exceptional companies. Worry less about what you will be doing, and worry more about being exceptional yourself. Everything else will take care of itself.
