Releasing to production more frequently is generally desirable, as it reduces the surface area of changes with each release. However, It can be hard to achieve as releases tend to impact reliability. SLOs can help track the impact of releases on the user experience. The act of releasing can burn some error budget - e.g. existing sessions get booted, or bugs that need to be rolled back. SLOs can help identify tech debt related to releasing that might prevent achieving a more regular / streamlined release cadence. This was certainly the case for at Nobl9 as dogfooding SLOs has helped us get to daily releases!

This week, Chipotle Mexican Grill founder Steve Ells opened up his latest NYC-based fast casual startup Kernel Foods to friends and family. The concept is designed to eliminate the so-called "waste" of the traditional restaurant model, leveraging automation and small-footprint stores with no space for dining or front-of-house, just pickup via mobile ordering. In the traditional QSR model, highly processed and frozen ingredients are used to ensure consistency, shelf-life, and affordability. Then came fast casuals that brought in fresh ingredients on site, driving up costs on both the ingredient and labor side. With Kernel, prep is done all-day long at a centralized commissary that can supply nearby satellite stores with fresh, pre-cooked ingredients that can be reheated and assembled at the store with electric ovens and just three employees. As implied in its tech-driven name, Kernel is much more than a new plant-based fast casual. It has aspirations of becoming a full fledged automation and operating platform, just as chains like CAVA and sweetgreen were protégés of Chipotle's original high-throughput model. Naturally, I had to send in beta tasters to get a sneak peek at the concept, which is set to fully open in early 2024.
