Are you living in one of Florida's healthiest counties? Three South Florida counties—Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe—are among the top 10 healthiest places to live in Florida. U.S. News & World Report assessed nearly 3,000 counties and highlighted key metrics that drive community health, such as food, education, and housing. Broward County secured the No. 4 spot in Florida, with Palm Beach at No. 6 and Monroe at No. 8, indicating strong infrastructure, food and nutrition, and economic scores. However, housing remains a significant challenge. St. Johns County, Seminole, and Sarasota lead the state rankings, also making it to the national top 500 healthiest communities. It's crucial for policymakers to focus on these rankings to address areas needing improvement, especially housing and healthcare access. Let's aim to create healthier communities for all Floridians. Are you taking advantage of the benefits your county offers? #FloridaLiving #HealthyCommunities #RealEstate #CommunityHealth #FloridaRealtor

Several months ago, I was one of many interviewed as part of the Milken Institute research on #affordablehousing and #olderadults. As their report shares, the demand for affordable senior housing and care will only increase as the US population ages. Each year, National Public Health Week, held on the first week of April, celebrates the vital contributions of public health and addresses critical issues essential for enhancing the well-being of our nation. It underscores the fact that public health extends far beyond healthcare. Today's theme, Healthy Neighborhoods, underscores the profound impact of our living environments on health. Where individuals reside, dine, work, travel, learn, and relax significantly influences their well-being. So, what defines a healthy neighborhood? It encompasses safe living spaces, infrastructure supporting physical activity, easy access to nutritious and affordable food, and areas free of pollution. When these elements are lacking, individuals within the community may face health challenges beyond their control. Building a healthy neighborhood hinges on social cohesion. Strengthening connections with neighbors and investing in communal spaces are initial steps toward fostering a thriving community. Advocating for accessible green spaces promotes leisure, exercise, and pollution reduction. Additionally, lobbying for increased access to healthy food, like farmer's markets in underserved areas, can yield long-term benefits. Moreover, governmental support for better infrastructure, including initiatives to replace aging pipes that pose health risks to low-income communities, plays a pivotal role in promoting community health. ????#NPHW?#NationalPublicHealthWeek?#HealthyNeighborhoods

What is public health? Urban planning and public health are inextricably intertwined, with the design of our cities directly shaping the health and well-being of those who live in them. Every decision an urban health professional makes—from the layout of neighborhoods to the placement of parks, healthcare facilities, and transportation systems—impacts public health in profound ways. By creating environments that prioritize clean air and water, safe housing, and accessible healthcare, urban planners are not just designing cities; they are safeguarding the health of entire populations. Urban health professionals are, by nature, public health practitioners. Their work goes beyond infrastructure; it’s about fostering equitable, healthy communities. Recognizing this overlap is essential, as it empowers urban health professionals to embrace their role in improving public health and addressing the social determinants that shape our lives. #EquityMatters #PublicHealth #WhatIsPublicHealth #HealthEquity #HealthyCommunities #CityDesign

What a way to finish the week! I’ve just come from “Strengthening Community Health - past history and implications for the future”. With nearly 100 Community Health leaders and 50 years of experience in the room, I learned more in 5 hours than I could have in 5 years on my own. Key Takeaways: 1. Community Health is extraordinary, delivering hundreds of key services for just 0.5% of the Victorian health budget. 2. Victoria’s system is a national gem. Other states are suffering from defunding Community Health. 3. Community Health is a key first responder in any crisis (anyone remember COVID, flood, bushfires?) 4. Imagine what would be possible if we doubled funding to just 1% of the Victorian health budget? Thank you Latrobe University, Victorian Primary and Community Health Network, The Australian Insititute of Primary Care and Ageing and Australian Journal of Primary Health for running this important event. #communityhealthfirst #communityhealth

????This National Public Health Week, let's focus on building healthier neighborhoods, especially for Black and minority communities! Here's how you can contribute: 1. ?? Plant trees to provide green spaces, reduce pollution, and foster community connections. Strengthen social cohesion by getting to know your neighbors and building strong community bonds. 2. ????♀? Start community walking groups to promote physical activity, particularly in areas lacking sidewalks. Bring fresh, healthy food to underserved areas through farmers' markets or direct delivery programs, prioritizing access for Black and minority communities. 3. ?? Expand access to broadband internet, especially in lower-income and rural areas, to improve academic outcomes and healthcare access for Black and minority populations. Invest in reliable and affordable public transportation to reduce pollution and traffic congestion, benefiting marginalized communities. 4. ??? Advocate for the removal of lead pipes in homes and public buildings to protect vulnerable populations, especially children in Black and minority communities. Push for policies that limit pollution near low-income communities and communities of color, improving air quality and overall health equity. ?? Let's work together to create neighborhoods where everyone can thrive, stay safe, and lead healthy lives. #NationalPublicHealthWeek #HealthyNeighborhoods #CommunityHealth #BCHWA #BCHWANV
