A new study led by researchers at Emory University and University of Pittsburgh reveals that pre-existing immunity to seasonal H1N1 flu may explain why most human cases of H5N1 bird flu in the U.S. haven't resulted in fatal outcomes. Senior author Dr. Seema Lakdawala emphasizes, "Pre-existing immunity against H1N1 can make H5N1 infections less severe, but young children, immunocompromised individuals, and those with underlying health conditions can still get seriously ill."
