What makes a picture feel more realistic? It is said the job of a cinematographer is making a two dimensional picture appear three dimensional so it feels more real to the audience. When done right, the brain is tricked into thinking that depth is there, even though you are looking at a flat plane. To this day, filmmakers reference old painters like Rembrandt who pushed that sense of realism using light, shadows, and color. They were the first ones to create the techniques we use. Simply put, it’s all about creating depth. Using lighting to create more depth, using camera angles to create more depth, using color to create more depth. Learning how to maximize every variable to add more depth to a frame can strengthen your shots in incredible ways. Check out this painting from Johannes Vermeer from 1664. You Can Make Anything Cinematic ?? spots can look incredible with the right lighting?? Here we use an Aputure 600x, 600c, & 300x to light our room and subject. The 600c was used to kick an ambient color on the background, the 300x acted as our rim light (the lighting edging the left of our subjects body) and the 600x was used as our Key light.
