What defines a producer? There seems to be varying definitions as the precise role of the producer in film & TV. An ideas person? A finance person? A practical person? A person responsible for everything and everyone behind the camera? Someone who produces talent, produces the editorial? A person with a very specific role to play? Or a person who does anything and everything to deliver the show? I have been credited as a producer many times over, but there are only a handful of times when I can hand on my heart say with complete conviction that I was - the Producer. And to me, that person is ALL of the above, but most importantly - a true producer is the person who the project simply would not exist without in any shape or form. I can say this about my movies Panic Button and The Sleeping Room - both my babies, but I cannot say the same for any of the broadcast TV programmes I have received a producer credit on in my entire career…. until now. Producing movies is notoriously difficult. Everything needs to align; concept, screenplay, talent, finance, connections, timing, and all these things cost money to develop. If you do align all these elements and deliver a good movie and are then lucky enough have it screened and distributed, it then needs to connect with an audience and translate into significant fiscal returns to stand any chance of forging a career and making a living in the industry. Armed with zero marketing spend, surrounded by sharks and competing against studio releases, it’s an impossible challenge to break out (and yet we still try!). So working in TV in many ways has always been the sensible option. A broadcaster commissions a show, you play your part within it and you get paid. Much much simpler and far less stressful! But when broadcasters stop commissioning and the wheels fall off that train (as we have witnessed this past year), where does that producer then turn? For the first time in my career, I decided to fuse the spirit of independent filmmaking with the energy and passion I apply to my day job - producing and directing TV shows. Not just any old TV show, but one that I’d actually love to see out there in the world. The result is a 50 min pilot for a paranormal series entitled Somerset Supernatural which receives its World Premiere through the good folks at Visit Somerset on 22nd May. I’m excited to share it with the world and certainly have high hopes for it, but my main accomplishment here Is the pride and empowerment derived from doing it myself, and being able to call myself a true Producer again. “The best education in film is to make one.” - Stanley Kubrick So far, my Brand Management Partnership at the S.E.A Aquarium in Resorts World Sentosa has gone beyond my expectations making me both more excited and committed to working in the film industry sometime in the near future. Recently, I was given the opportunity to serve as a cinematographer for a series where my team interviewed guests on their knowledge about marine species. This episode focused on sea jellies, and I left learning two important lessons. First being that the term “jellyfish” is incorrect because these animals are actually invertebrates, and second to not overestimate how hard it is to learn a new skill. Usually, I use tripods (three-legged stands) to balance camera shots, but instead I was given a monopod (one-legged stand) which I never used before. Initially, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get the hang of the equipment quickly enough, but ironically it was the complete opposite. Lesson learned: Stop worrying too much. Can’t wait for the next film shoot and get the chance to initiate my own ideas into full-length projects for the aquarium’s social media pages. #SASQuest #aquarium #partnership #communications #brandmanagement

???????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ?????? ?????? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? Our short film premiered on Omeleto, one of the largest short film channels. A lot of work went into this project during our free time, and while many things didn't turn out as planned, some aspects ended up being better than expected. The usual drill :D The project was already amazing when it came to me and actually "only" needed editing. However, Paul Cless and Matthias Ludwig, the filmmakers behind Patchworld, asked for my creative input, as we needed some creative solutions. For example, there was a scene involving "stardust" (No spoilers from me, but if you watched it you know what I mean). This scene didn’t work as envisioned, and a reshoot was not an option for Matthias and Paul. So, we had to find a solution. I had a blast working on this as an editor and executive producer. And as always, I learned a lot during the editing and post-production phases. As I always say, editing can ruin the best film in the world or make a bad script bearable if you know how to do it. Contributing my editing ideas to this cool project reminds me once again that there are no blueprints for film editing. An editor can also act as an author through their cuts. Here’s a brief summary of the film’s story in case you want to know what you’re getting into before watching it. ??????: The YouTube algorithm considers a partially watched film as a sort of dislike, which can hurt its performance.
