I highly recommend checking out the latest episode of Second Opinion with Ash Zenooz, MD and Christina Farr, where they dive into the ongoing shortage of women at the CEO level, plus a recap of their experiences at the HLTH USA conference. As for my HLTH experience, I did spend most of my time in the exhibit hall between meetings, visiting booths, roundtables, and attending some presentations. Outside of the conference was spent networking at Starbucks, Dinner and the Knights Hockey Game. I did miss the pool at the Palazzo with a pi?a colada in hand like Ash. Next time! When it comes to women in leadership, healthcare once led the charge with more women CEOs in publicly traded companies than any other industry. But that’s no longer the case. Here’s the reason they think this shifted: The economy has changed over the last year, investors are relying on familiar faces that they’ve seen succeed before. There are less women in healthcare leadership as a whole. Not many women are taking on P&L responsibilities. And let’s not forget, being mission-driven, a great communicator, and a strong storyteller. With the current M&A trend, many organizations seem to lack that clear strategic direction which is causing more CEO turnover. Some statistics they brought up: A company stock dips when a woman is named CEO, but only if she’s a public figure. If she’s private, there’s no dip. It seems traders aren’t necessarily biased, but they believe others are, which leads to that initial stock drop. As of now, only 13% of Fortune 500 companies have women CEOs.

I’m Paula. I work with women in pharma who are told they are a safe pair of hands. I help them to recognise and communicate their value so they get the opportunities they deserve. You know these women. The whole industry runs as well as it does because of them. Efficient. Just get on with stuff. Don’t need to ask for help. Usually the longest serving member of the team. The person people go to for knowledge and ‘who do I need to talk to about…’. But you don’t think to include her in meetings about strategy decisions. And they are frustrated and slowly, slowly disengaging and losing motivation because there is only so long you can put up with less experienced people being promoted over you. If you have one of these fabulous women in your team, please, this week, sit down with her and actually talk to her and SEE her. And think about how great her career path was until it slowed. And imagine, just imagine, what a bit of attention and focus, with someone like me, could do for her. And therefore, for you. Over the last 7 years we’ve built Theolytics from concept to clinic. Thank you Hays and George Costard for inviting me to share some of those experiences last week on such a lively, relevant Biotech Executive Event panel! One key reflection - as long as we remain a minority in leadership roles, women championing other women in biotech can only go so far, so fast. It takes conscious effort from all of us to ‘level-up’.
