?? INTER PARES is excited to host a workshop series on Gender-Sensitive Parliaments! ? On January 8 and 15, 2025, we will bring together parliamentary staff from Belgium, Botswana, Cyprus, France, and Zambia to exchange insights and explore innovative strategies for??????????????????? ???????????? ???????????????? ???? ??????????????????????. ? ?? During this inspiring online series, we will:? ·???????Provide an overview of gender equality in Zambia and Botswana, and explore global trends, with support from independent, local civil society actors. ·???????Introduce the features of a gender-sensitive parliament and the role of specialised gender bodies, like committees and caucuses. ·???????Describe how parliaments can start to become more gender-sensitive, including audits, and the challenges faced by parliaments. ·???????Explore ways to mainstream gender into law-making and oversight work, including budgeting, and the role of public engagement in this process. Applications are open for the 2024 Pathways to Politics course. I completed it a couple of years ago and it is excellent. I did the UNSW version, but there are courses in different locations. ROOTING OUT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN POLITICS (VAWIP) - A Feminist Perspective. As Feminists, promoting gender and social justice requires interrogating the systems of oppression (capitalism, neo-colonialism, and patriarchy) which facilitates forces of violence against women and girls. The domination, discrimination, dehumanization, and lack of dignity of African women are caused by these systems, which continue to play a role in undermining the progress of democracy on the continent. In this think piece, we elucidate what it would take to root out violence against women in politics.

A compelling opinion piece on Devex, written by Julia Hochberger, Shila Ukumbini Salim, & Elizabeth Warindi underscores a crucial narrative: the most effective policies for youth are those shaped by youth themselves. As we navigate complex global challenges, the insights and innovations of young people are not just beneficial but essential for crafting sustainable solutions. There needs to be a paradigm shift towards more inclusive policy-making processes that actively engage youth, not just as beneficiaries but as partners in design and implementation. Let’s commit to policies crafted by and for youth, ensuring they have a direct hand in shaping the world they will inherit. ?? Last week was the week of the 57th Commission on Population & Development, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Cairo ICPD agenda. I was deeply honoured to be part of the multi-stakeholder panel of the official programme, representing Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW) to place gender equality and women's rights in the centre of discussions. The challenges to gender equality include #climatechange, deepening #poverty & inequality, decreased resourcing for health, persistent lack of fulfilment of #women's human rights and global political instability brought by aggressor nations including the incessant and unending devastation wrought upon the Palestinian people are the and the inability of august institutions such as the UN to address these challenges. Hence, rights around bodily autonomy and bodily integrity become the lynchpin to ensuring that women and girls in all our diversity are able to have a chance at surviving and having a decent future. The solutions are: #systemschange where the rights of women are fulfilled by all of the systems economic, social, education, health we interact with; recognising, respecting and fulfilling the human rights of women; and to design for inclusion in policies and prorgamming. In my closing I urged governments to start doing the hard things, because the world's needs demand for boldness and courage. Greatful to the Russia, Ukraine and the Caucasus regional research center for an opportunity to discuss current challenges in ensuring better protection of human rights in Armenia. With Valentina Gevorgyan and Srbuhi Michikyan, among other issues, we spoke of internal but also external issues that negatively impact on our attempts to promote justice sector and anti-corruption reforms, including how difficult it is for civil society organizations in Armenia to concentrate on internal reform agenda in light of external security threats and human rights issues arising from the use of force.

My latest op-ed in Dawn.com explores this journey—how figures like Fatima Jinnah, Benazir Bhutto, and today’s leaders like Maryam Nawaz, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, and Asifa Bhutto Zardari have shaped and redefined Pakistan’s political DNA. The progress is undeniable: greater representation, legislative reforms, and increasing agency in policymaking. Yet, challenges remain—barriers to voter participation, struggles for decision-making seats, and the ongoing push for gender-inclusive governance.
