#ICYMI: "It is only those who willfully will not see, who shut their eyes to progress, who will deny that South Africa today is an infinitely better place than it was thirty years ago. We have established a society founded on the rule of law and the premise of equality before the law." #quote These words from President Cyril Ramaphosa resonate deeply as we reflect on #SouthAfrica's remarkable journey. As a #researcher straddling the realms of #academia and real-world practice, I participated in the recent "International Dialogue DEMOCRACY and Development" at the esteemed Pan-African Parliament Precinct. Amidst the rich discussions and thought-provoking exchanges, Dr. Grace Naledi Pandor, Minister of Department of International Relations and Cooperation,https://lnkd.in/djQq7Jx7 illuminated the path forward with her profound insights. The convergence of theory and reality as I recall during lunch at the #presidential lounge of "Africa House," as affectionately referred to by the Chief of Staff to the CEO, African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), underscored the importance of collaborative dialogue in shaping our collective destiny. Hosted graciously by the Clerk, Pan-African Parliament, in partnership with National Youth Development Agency, this event served as a beacon of hope for #southafrica and by extension the African Union. Now, more than ever, we are called to action. Let us heed The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa Ramaphosa's call to embrace progress and acknowledge the strides we've made. But let us not rest on our laurels. Instead, let us commit ourselves to the relentless pursuit of equality, justice, and development for all. Together, we can build a brighter future for South Africa and beyond. ?? Recent findings from Afrobarometer highlight a notable decline in public confidence in democracy across the continent. While 66% of Africans still prefer democratic governance, over the last decade, dissatisfaction has grown significantly, with 53% now open to the idea of military intervention due to political and economic frustrations. This is a stark contrast to the 80% endorsement of democracy just ten years ago ??? To reverse this trend, it is vital for citizens to feel their votes reflect their true will. Promoting transparency, accountability, and effective governance is essential for restoring faith in democratic processes and empowering the youth for a better future ?????? . In his closing remarks at the 3rd Stakeholders’ Convening on Governance, Democracy and Human Rights in Africa Southern Africa Edition Jan Hofmeyr , Head of Policy and Research at IJR, emphasized the importance of knowledge in sustaining democracies. He noted that Knowledge is, indeed, power. It is the lifeblood of vibrant democracies, which is premised on the idea that citizens, based on the knowledge that they have of the matters that affect them, mandate elected representatives to represent their interests in legislative fora.
