Today, on World Braille Day, we celebrate the transformative power of braille in ensuring access to information, education, and culture for persons with visual impairments or otherwise print disabled. Intellectual Property (IP) plays a critical role in this mission. Through the Marrakesh Treaty—adopted under the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)—countries have committed to improving access to published works for persons with print disabilities. This treaty facilitates the creation and cross-border exchange of accessible formats like braille, audio, and large print books, breaking barriers to knowledge and opportunity. ARTISAN OF THE WEEK This week, we hear more about our skilled female bricklayer, Darlines Chipeta. She explains more about her journey. Read her story below. ------------------------------------ My name is Darliness Chipeta, and I'm a bricklayer. I've been in this profession for a while now, and I must say, it's not easy. Despite the challenges, I've chosen to pursue bricklaying because I'm passionate about it. Initially, I thought it was just a matter of laying bricks, but I soon realized it requires a lot of hard work and dedication. There are times when the work gets tough, and you feel like giving up. But I've learned to stay focused and motivated, even when faced with difficulties. As a single mother, it's not easy to balance work and family responsibilities. There are times when I feel overwhelmed, but I remain hopeful that my situation will improve one day. My dream is to provide a better life for my child, and I'm willing to work hard to achieve that. I want to encourage others who may be facing similar challenges to stay strong and focused. Don't give up on your dreams, even when things seem impossible. You most likely don't need experience with every. single. bullet. point. or. requirement. If you have most of the qualifications and an interest in the rest, take your shot! 2.) Do more than simply apply. That #ReferralRoute is the way to go! Use filters via LinkedIn to your advantage. 3.) Prospect way more than just jobs. Identify relevant communities to engage with, make a prospect list of companies (leverage AI tools to help build!), and prospect and do outreach to Recruiters who specialize in your skill set! 4.) There should never be any shame in your game! All month long, the Southern Chiefs' Organization is raising awareness and promoting education through our campaign on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two Spirit, and Gender-Diverse People (MMIWG2S+). Join in the initiative by picking up a SCO MMIWG2S+ t-shirt, candle, and booklet that shares the 231 Calls for Justice from the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. You can pick up all three at SCO’s sub-office at 1572 Dublin Avenue during regular office hours, Mon-Fri from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (closed from 12 noon – 1 pm each day).
