there's been a lot of discussion of Flo Health Inc. reaching unicorn status this week both good and bad. on one hand it's absolutely incredible to see a femtech and women's health company raise 200M in funding, on the other hand, it brings to light the vast discrepancy in what female founders are raising for similar products in the same vertical. outside of 2023, female founders historically raise 1/4 of the funding that their male counterparts raise, in women's health. in other words, women building health products for women will raise 75% less funds than men building health products for women. as much as i think the landscape needs to be balanced, this is clearly not balanced. in a time where women's health is finally coming to the forefront, we need to fund the women building in this space more than ever. there are no better advocates for health, safety and well-being in this space then the women experiencing it themselves. thank you Ruffin Mitchener for calling this out. we need to do better.

Yesterday, Flo Health Inc., a male founded and funded app, became the first women's health company to achieve unicorn status. In 2024, women's health remains predominantly controlled by men. ?? I'm baffled by this VC trend *Edited to add more startups* What's up with ?????? being given to male founding teams designing femhealth products? Like there aren't enough female founders to invest in? Especially female founders who "eat their own dogfood". WTF? According to CB Insights, femtech markets like?virtual & hybrid women's healthcare?and?menopause care are (finally) getting some VC interest. This "trend" has been centuries in the making. And, as far as I know, this still hasn't translated in a more meaningful way into female-founded femtech startups getting $$. We need to change it. And talk about it. And tell others about it. For both articles, reporters asked investors to nominate startups outside of their portfolio. Frontline Ventures Partner Zoe Chambers said “Levy Health was founded by three incredible women…it equips healthcare professionals with the ability to diagnose women with frequently misdiagnosed conditions…it’s now selling into the fertility sector in the US”. Sometimes, success isn't the whole story. A women's health company Flo Health Inc. just raised $200M and became one of the few unicorns in the space. That sounds like a win, right? Here's why some women are upset: ???????????????? ?????? ???????? and mostly led by Men: Such capital influx and valuation are exceptional, especially in women-led industries. A company founded by men, led by men and funded by men becomes first consumer WOMEN'S health app to achieve unicorn status. Awesome Women ?????????????????????? ?????? ???????????????? ????????: Female-led communities like Women Who Code have recently shut down. These communities are essential—they provide mentorship, resources, and a sense of belonging for women in tech. Losing them feels like a step back. So, while the $200M raise is impressive, it highlights a broader issue: we need more inclusive, supportive environments for women in tech and business.
