Jury service. My first reaction was to groan. For anyone not familiar with it, a quick explainer. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 75 can be summoned for two weeks of jury service. This entails going to your nearest Crown court, where more serious cases are tried, for a fortnight. Once there, you may be asked to sit as part of a jury of 12 and deliver verdicts of Guilty or Not Guilty on Defendants. If you cannot agree to do the jury service in the slot you are given (I couldn’t, diary was full), then you’re obliged to provide an alternative fortnight within 12 months. No excuses. So this is how I found myself sat with a bunch of other confused looking members of the public a couple of weeks ago (January would be a “quiet” time to suggest I thought. Yeah right!). ? I was slightly surprised to be there. Many people I knew had been called to say they weren’t needed in the days running up to jury service, so I was expecting similar. I received no such call. The courts were busy, covering their own cases as well as some from another court. Jurors are selected at random from those who are present and I was selected for one case. The process is a bit chaotic. This isn’t the fault of the courts service, but a product of many last minute changes. Adjournments, defendants changing their pleas etc. I was advised to take a book due to the stop/start nature of it all. I could see why. ? I won’t go into the details of the case, other than to say that it could have been much worse, but what really struck me was the effect of choosing people entirely at random. I wouldn’t normally be sat around a meeting table with someone who makes a living by dressing up as a Disney princess (she was brilliant by the way!). Or with an HGV driver. Everyone brought a different perspective and it was fantastic to see. I regularly think about diversity in a work context but more often than not, it relates to what is still a fairly narrow set of differences between groups of people. Jury service on the other hand is as diverse as you can get. Society from all its marvellous angles. I soon stopped being grumpy about having to clear my diary. I embraced the opportunity for a bunch of properly diverse conversations and looking back, it was a privilege to do it. #diversity

So proud of our practice and our firm's success in this year's Chambers rankings - moving to Band 1 in Export Controls/Economic Sanctions, Trade Remedies/Trade Policy, and Customs, in addition to 14 individual rankings in our international trade group alone! This is a truly awesome recognition of what many of us and our clients have known all along -- Akin is the world's premier international trade practice. We could not have done it without our incredible clients who bring the most challenging issues to us, and our dedicated team around the globe. #Chambers #trade #sanctions #exportcontrols #customs #traderemedies #tradepolicy #onwardandupward
We are proud to have more than 100 Akin lawyers recognized as leaders in their respective areas of practice in Chambers and Partners' USA 2024 guide, as well as more than 50 practices across the publication’s nationwide and state-level categories. Congratulations to all on these recognitions. Full details on the rankings can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ejSDuqTU #ChambersAndPartners #ChambersUSA #LegalRankings

I don’t want to bust the bubble of those who trade on Chambers recognition at compensation time ( although I always enjoyed some recognition ). In a follow up of a report I did for a group of American legal and PE firms, a major legal consulting firm looked at the major client following of Chambers ranked Canadian business lawyers and found many cases where the client following and deal record of ranked lawyers over the last three years is far below that of lower or unranked partners. There are cases of Band 1 or Eminent Ranked partners who don’t have a material deal for a regular top tier active client during that period. Indeed, there are more Group Co-Heads in some cases than top tier clients of the whole group. I suppose we always knew that the rankings were dated or the result of intense lobbying in some cases but clients would be well advised to look into how active people have been in recent years and whether they still work for the clients they claim in their deal lists. Check with three or four true stars at different experience levels or with great GCs using several firms; they know who really delivers. By the way, I stand behind everyone of the stars I have mentioned in my posts here! There are lots of great people out there but look behind and beyond the label conferred by a talk with a friendly client or sweet talking Group Head pushing a “ friend”.

Whilst our competitors are going to events and "winning awards"... The team at Ali Legal Ltd have hard at work on the following: ?? Writing contracts ?? Creating pleadings ?? Advancing court cases ?? Progressing deals ?? Doing great work. It's not flashy and it's not sexy (well I'd argue that because it's us, it is ??), But to us, every matter matters and we remain committed to our clients first and foremost. Although I've been approached in the past (unsolicited) about them, I've not really pursued awards for my law firm. In fact, I consider it to be a bit of a racket. ?? Even some of the biggest awards in the industry require you to apply and pay for your "table". "Select your package: Bronze, silver or gold" in the most literal sense. Whilst industry events like this can be enjoyable and can result in good PR, we prioritise actually working for our clients instead. Does this mean I would turn down an award if we were put in for one? Probably not, but I'd like us to get there by our own merit. Because at Ali legal, we let our work do the talking. What are your views on awards ceremonies/events? PS: Here's a selfie from 6am this morning, before going offline at the office and hyper-focusing on client work. I love what I do. #law #legal #lawfirm #events #awards
