For me, in a previous role, a customer survey helped uncover that customers hated hidden fees much more than they loved our products. That hidden-fee-annoyance drove more customer churn than our products drove loyalty so the net result was higher cost to acquire new customers than we got through the fees. There is a lot of obsession over data when it comes to customer churn – Churn prediction models, engagement metrics, NPS scores... You name it. But here's what is often overlooked: Simply talking to your customers. Most customers show signs of churn early on, about 2-3 months before they actually do. By creating a system for having regular check-ins, there's still time to turn things around or get more customer understanding. Usually those check-in discussions are filled with interesting and beneficial topics, so that both parties end the call with something valuable. Yes, data and analytics are powerful tools. But they can't replace genuine conversations from where the most valuable insights often come.
