Today, on Veterans Day, I am reflecting on the unwavering sense of purpose that drove my father and so many of his generation to serve during World War II. In an era without instant communication, where letters were the only lifeline to home, they stepped up and fought with a strong commitment to the ideals of freedom and democracy. This sense of purpose to the principles of liberty, equality and justice is one we must continue to uphold. While we express our gratitude to veterans for bearing the cost of freedom, we must also recognize our shared responsibility to protect these values. ?In a world that faces unprecedented challenges to democracy and freedom, the question we must ask ourselves is: How do we each contribute to safeguarding these ideals in our daily lives? This is the duty of every citizen — and we can each make a difference through our individual actions, conversations, and choices. And with current events in mind, I am reminded of how fragile these values can be. Today and every day, I hope we consider how to take part in preserving freedom and democracy in our own lives and the lives of our children. Happy Memorial Day! The question is often asked "Should I Thank a Veteran on Memorial Day?". Well, we think it's appropriate to thank a Veteran for their service on any day of the calendar year...however, it is a complex question. It is essential to understand the distinction between these two observances to ensure our gratitude is appropriately directed. The population of veterans in this country is one that falls into broad categories. For the most part we do well. the things we learned in the military translate well into successful life lessons. We bolster communities through positive action, stabilize companies thru our hard learned leadership, start up businesses, and now run for public offices. Then there are those other guys who aren't doing well. After combat we sometimes lose our purpose in life. without purpose we die. We die a long slow death of anger and disenfranchisement or we just jump the shark and end it. Some branches and units do worse than others in a post combat world. There are tons of books on the subject. you can pick your favorite psychobabble to adhere to. My particular take is exactly that when we lose purpose we lose hope. When we lose hope we lose faith. We lose faith in God, the United States, our social organizations, & if left unchecked, one another. In my mind this is the proverbial fate worse than death. I believe the solution to this is not government programs, VA counseling & pharmaceuticals, or discounts at Lowe's for having served (although I use the Lowe's thing every couple weeks). The solution I believe is to help veterans return to faith and thus return to a purpose where as I said above, those skills that were forged in military leadership schools and hardened on a battlefield will serve new purpose going forward. I see much of serving God as a military process. it is relatively easy to see Christ the warrior king throughout the Bible and also to see militaristic aspects of the Devil's attempts to block and counter. To that end I am starting up a Christian fellowship for combat veterans. We will start meeting on June 16th at the Kalispell, Montana VFW at 1130.
