Some people see a beat-up old building and immediately?think it has to be torn down. I'm the opposite. Here's why I like restoring and repurposing old buildings: 1 - It's cost effective. Even though this project will cost $300/sf, that's still less expensive than tearing it down and rebuilding with the same historic details. Having a solid foundation and frame in place will usually save money. 2 - It's stimulating. Major renovation projects are pound-for-pound more difficult than new construction. A) the buildings aren't usually well designed for the new use and B) new surprises?are around every corner once you start demolition. These always seem to be more hands on. 3 - It feels good. There's satisfaction in taking something?ugly and transforming it. Here, we're taking a 100 year-old building and setting it up to last the next 100 years. That's almost rewarding in its own right. This project is a single-family house and horse barn built in 1900 that we're turning into six affordable housing units in Bradford, VT.
