I find this to be so true in Sales. It is always the temptation (especially for sales reps who become managers for the first time) to jump in and tell people on their team what to do. Setting up sales teams to coach each other is the most effective way for the both the newer and more experienced reps to learn. It is why I have tended to shy away from hiring the "lone ranger" who is just concerned about their number. That kind of selfish behavior by a top performer can kill a culture, or at least stop it from flourishing. Teams that learn together, thrive together.
Big football at colleges in the US costs more than $5 billion a year. And none of these programs has a student acting as a coach. The same analysis, at a much smaller scale, applies to school theater directors and producers, conductors of the jazz band ...
