It's great to see someone like Jay-Z step into the school choice movement. ?? His recent advocacy for school vouchers in Pennsylvania highlights a critical discussion that affects the future of education in our country. At Odyssey, we have long championed school choice programs for their ability to empower parents to select the best educational options for their children. These programs provide families with the flexibility to choose from a variety of educational opportunities, including public, private, charter, home schooling, and supplemental education of state approved educational products, goods, and services. We're excited to see more people championing the cause. Kudos to Jay-Z and the Roc Nation team for their work - let's keep pushing to make choice a reality for more families nationwide! #Education #SchoolChoice #ESA #EdTech #GovTech https://lnkd.in/gjvE6D_H

Legislators should pass HB 4082 "House Bill 4082 would invest $50 million for school districts that have a developed plan for summer learning programs that provide a minimum of 80 hours of instruction or activities through tribal and community partnerships. "The programs would be required to focus on academic enrichment and youth development and must have plans for family engagement and accessibility. In short, to qualify for funds from the state, school districts must have a summer learning program that is focused on helping Oregon’s students develop the skills necessary to continue to rebound from pandemic-related learning losses." Effective strategies making IMPACT on school attendance. This article is worth reading. ?? One way is through better instruction. A Stanford study found that high-impact tutoring, defined as 90 minutes a week of small-group instruction, is projected to improve attendance by two to three days in the year. ?? A key policy focuses on two key components: data and relationships. 1) School leaders must know who is struggling, as indicated by pupils’ absences, grades and other criteria. Many schools do not have reliable data, and if they do have the information, they are not analysing it to identify trends and the troubled. 2) It also involves relationship-building with families. For some, this means getting help with immediate needs. The school hosted a resource fair where families were able to learn about federal programmes that provide housing and food. It also connected parents with potential employers, faith-based services and other local resources. Love the shout out from the National Parents Union! https://lnkd.in/gjtaQhfM

It is always so easy to break things. Destroying something takes no imagination. It’s in the building where our imaginations take a leap. Lately, it’s been cool to mock the U.S. Department of Education. What does it even do? Some ask. #Trump’s #Project2025 goes a step further. It proposes the elimination and destruction of the U.S. Department of #Education. Imagine wanting to dismantle a government agency that supports #Education? In the spirit of education, here are some FACTS: It is the U.S. Department of Education that funds the #TPSIDGrants for #InclusiveCollege. In 2020, University of California, Davis received a $2.1 million five-year TPSID grant to build the #RedwoodSEEDScholars Program. Our program is a four-year, residential, inclusive college program for students with #IntellectualDisabilities. The goal is a full, independent, self-determined life with paid employment and independent living. It’s possible. That money will prepare 42 young adults with #IntellectualDisabilities to live their full lives, which means that they will use less state and federal money this year alone. It’s an investment with a real payoff for the government. A true win/win. The U.S. Department of Education doesn’t just fund educational grants. ??It provides technical assistance to families who have children with disabilities. ?? It fully funds Head Start - preschool for the most marginalized students. ?? It funds Title One supports for schools and students who need extra support. ?? The Department's elementary and secondary programs annually serve nearly 18,200 school districts and over 50 million students attending roughly 98,000 public schools and 32,000 private schools. ??Department programs also provide grant, loan, and work-study assistance to more than 12 million postsecondary students. The U.S. Department of Education serves 50 MILLION preschool-12th grade students?? And another 12 MILLION post-secondary students?? The U.S. Department of Education is doing important, impactful work for children. It’s not sexy. It’s not flashy. But it matters. Don’t let anyone destroy it. Look to people who have better imaginations than that.

Parents using the public school system in the U.S. had little choice where to send their children to school as recently as a few decades ago. The rise of charter schools changed the education marketplace and provided new options, even for parents without the means or desire to send their students to private schools. "Charters add more options and different models of schools to the system, which usually gives parents more choice," James Bacon, former staffing director at Boston Public Schools and current director of outreach and operations at education technology firm Edficiency, wrote in an email. "In many ways, the biggest pros and cons of charter schools stem from the same fact: That in most cases, charter schools are given more freedom than traditional public schools." The District of Columbia and 45 states have laws that allow public charter schools. But in many places, there are no local charter school options – just traditional public and private schools. For families able to consider charter schools, here are some things to know. The Difference Between Charter and Public Schools Charter schools are publicly funded, tuition-free schools, but they differ from traditional public schools in key ways. Comparing charter schools to public schools requires weighing a few considerations. First, charters have more flexibility. Rather than being part of a public school district, which dictates curriculum and standards in all schools, charters operate autonomously through individual agreements, or charters, with state or local governments that set rules and student performance standards. #talentServe

What factors make a diverse charter school successful? Sonia C. Park, executive director of the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition (DCSC), sat down with Alex Medler, executive director of the National Network for District Authorizing (NN4DA), on DCSC’s 10th anniversary to discuss what #charterschool applicants should consider before submitting their petition, and what #charterauthorizers should look for to assess a charter applicant’s capacity and commitment to #educationdiversity. ? The most important piece, said Park, is for applicants and authorizers to have a conversation of the practicalities of running a diverse school and putting vision into practice. “At the heart of the work that we are doing…is really thinking about what does equity inclusion look like, about how this is going to work, where are you going to be located, how are you going to get families to your school, and how are you going to support your teachers in professional development to make sure they're able to deliver the program that you envision.” ?https://lnkd.in/gDQEm67p

GOV. Abbott, Texans don’t need school vouchers.? … Texans who can already afford to send their Children to private schools don’t need a subsidy paid by Texas Taxpayers, especially if that subsidy is paid at the expense of Texas Public Schools. … We have large rural/agricultural areas within Texas, where there are no private schools, where Texas Families depend upon the education provided to their Children by Texas Public Schools, and where a school voucher offers no value. Regarding Klein ISD: — fix the problem; invest into our Texas Public Schools so they work like they should for our Children — fire & prosecute Teachers who broke our laws and violated our Children — replace those Teachers with qualified, ethical, professional Teachers — fire the Principle if oblivious to what was going on in their School — get rid of the School Board if they failed to provide oversight — School vouchers would not have prevented KISD problems. Similar problems have also occurred in private schools. — maybe paying Teachers more, in order to attract qualified, ethical educators, might be a better investment than school vouchers for wealthy parents in urban/suburban areas, who can already afford to send their Children to private schools? — maybe empowering Teachers to do their job, by investing into & creating a culture which is focused on meeting & exceeding educational goals, and backing-up the professional educators who prepare our Children to pursue the American Dream, might be a better investment of Texas taxpayers’ time & money? ** American Exceptionalism has been defined by our ability to invest in public eduction & bring to fruition the potential inherent in our Children. Our public schools set America apart from the rest of the world, as generations of highly educated American Children began to innovate, create, produce, and drive the progress of a prosperous reality for our Nation. … Don’t cripple Texas Public Schools. Invest in our Texas Public Schools, and invest in all of our Children, rural & urban, low-income & high-income, throughout the great State of Texas.

As we confront the pandemic’s lingering effects of disrupted learning, it is imperative that we harness every available resource to accelerate the recovery process. High Impact tutoring is a piece of the puzzle but it is not the whole picture. Universal OST Programs can play a pivotal role in addressing equity. By engaging every student, expanding access to afterschool and summer learning, we can “open doors to every child” — whether they live in Paterson or Parsippany — so they can have the opportunity to thrive. Currently, many low-income families struggle to afford school-age child care, leading to disparities in access to enrichment opportunities. Research has shown that students who participate in high-quality afterschool programs demonstrate increased engagement in school, improved grades, and enhanced social-emotional skills. High quality OST programs offer a structured environment where students can receive targeted academic support, engage in hands-on learning experiences, and explore their interests beyond the structure of the traditional school day. In New York – Governor Kathy Hochul announced over $100 million in state grants – an increase of $17.7 million over last year’s funding – will be made available to fund afterschool programs across New York State. Why Not New Jersey? According to the Afterschool Alliance, 89% of parents express support for public funding for afterschool programs, signaling a widespread recognition of their value. Universal OST is a necessity for working families. OST programs serve as a lifeline for working families and are a crucial component of our state’s educational and economic strategy. With Universal Out-of-School Time, parents can pursue career opportunities with the peace of mind that their children are engaged in constructive activities and receiving academic support. By making these programs universally available, regardless of socioeconomic status, NJ can level the playing field, ensure every student succeeds and support working families in the process. #LastPost #LightsOnAfterschool

It's #NationalCharterSchoolsWeek, and even in 2024, there are still individuals unaware of what a charter school truly is! Shockingly, just yesterday, a state official referred to a charter school as a "private school" at an event. If you're a charter supporter, leader, advocate, or board member, let's spread the facts and clear up misconceptions! -Charter schools are publicly funded schools that operate independently of traditional public school districts. -Charter schools have more autonomy than traditional public schools in terms of curriculum, hiring practices, and budget management. This flexibility allows them to innovate and tailor their programs to meet the needs of their students. -While charter schools have more freedom than traditional public schools, they are still held accountable for their academic performance and financial management. They must adhere to state academic standards and undergo regular evaluations to ensure accountability. -Charter schools serve a diverse student population, including students from various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Many charter schools focus on serving specific communities or addressing specific educational needs, such as language immersion programs or STEM education. -Charter schools receive public funding on a per-pupil basis, similar to traditional public schools. - Charter schools are open to all students and are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, or other factors. In cases where demand exceeds available space, charter schools may use a lottery system to determine admissions. #wearecharter #charterstrong #spreadtruth #spreadfacts #charteradvocates #chartersupporters
