?? Breaking the Silence: Empowering Conversations about Menstruation and Environmental Sustainability ?? I recently had the privilege of participating in a discussion organized by Asaase Yaa and friends in collaboration with Think Health on the topic of "Breaking the Silence: Empowering Conversations about Menstruation." During this insightful event, we delved into the environmental sustainability of various menstrual products and practices. ?? Key Insights from Our Discussion: Global Usage: On any given day, about 800 million women worldwide are menstruating, and many rely on disposable sanitary products. Environmental Impact: Each sanitary pad contains the equivalent of about four plastic bags, taking 500 to 800 years to decompose. Improper disposal often leads to these products ending up in urban sewage systems, landfills, and water bodies. Chemical Concerns: Sanitary products can contain chemicals like dioxin, chlorine, and synthetic fragrances, which may leach into the environment, polluting soil and water sources. Tampon applicators can break down into harmful microplastics affecting marine life. Carbon Footprint: The total carbon footprint from manufacturing, packaging, and transporting disposable menstrual products contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, reusable products like menstrual cups or cloth pads have a much lower carbon footprint over their lifecycle. ?? Sustainable Solutions: To mitigate these environmental impacts, we must: Promote Eco-Friendly Menstrual Products: Raising awareness about the benefits of sustainable menstrual products is crucial. Educational Initiatives: Incorporating menstruation education in homes, schools, and workplaces can help reduce stigma and encourage responsible practices. ?? Inclusive Conversations: Engaging Men: Including men in conversations about menstruation is vital to break the stigma and foster respectful, open discussions. Community Awareness: Highlighting the environmental impacts and promoting sustainable alternatives can lead to significant positive changes. By embracing eco-friendly menstrual products and encouraging open, inclusive conversations about menstruation, we can reduce the environmental footprint and help achieve our sustainability goals by 2030. Let's work together to create a more sustainable future for all! ?? #Asaaseyaaandfriendsnetwork #ThinkhealthGhana #Sustainability #Menstruation #EnvironmentalImpact #EcoFriendly #Awareness #Inclusion #SustainableLiving

Every year, 1.4 million lives are lost due to inadequate #water, #sanitation, and #hygiene services, as per World Health Organization. ? Access to water and sanitation is crucial for all, especially vital for #women and girls, given their reproductive and menstrual health needs. ? Unfortunately, despite this significance, women are often excluded from crucial discussions and decisions on water, sanitation, and hygiene. It is imperative to actively involve them in developing policies, programs, and initiatives to improve women's access to responsibilities, optimizing decision-making processes related to water and sanitation services. ? Together, let's advocate for equitable participation of women in all #decision-making bodies, striving for a world where no one is left behind. ? #GoldenSludge
