Freediving Blackout Rescue A freediving blackout is a loss of consciousness due to hypoxia, which occurs when the brain lacks sufficient oxygen. This often happens during ascent, as the pressure decreases and oxygen levels drop critically. Blackouts can happen suddenly and without warning, posing a significant risk to divers. They are most common in competitive and deep freediving but can occur at any depth. Prevention includes proper training, adequate surface intervals, and never diving alone. Rescue procedure during constant weight descent: For rescuing a diver during constant weight descent: Immediately identify signs of a blackout, such as limp body or unresponsiveness. Swiftly ascend with the diver, ensuring their airway remains close. Once at the surface, tap and blow on the diver face and talk to them, provide rescue breaths if the diver is not resuming breathing. Keep at any time the diver's airway clear and head above water.
