Well-known as a major cause of bronchiolitis in infants, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can also cause serious complications, up to and including death, in the elderly, including those aged 75. During the 2022-2023 winter season in France, this category accounted for 61% of RSV-related hospitalizations and 78% of RSV-related deaths. While no treatment for RSV respiratory infections has been available until now, two vaccines have recently been granted marketing authorization for seniors: Arexvy (GSK) and Abrysvo (Pfizer). In view of the risks of bronchiolitis for senior citizens, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) recommends vaccination against RSV, the main virus causing this infection.

"First comes the fever, dry cough and puffy eyes. Then comes the red, blotchy rash. There’s no treatment to get rid of a measles infection, but symptoms are manageable. According to the CDC, the best way to protect against the infection is a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles. While measles usually clears up on its own after about two weeks, 1 in 5 will be hospitalized with the infection. Children aged 5 and under are at higher risk. In Arizona, the number of elementary schools whose kindergarteners are considered immune to a measles outbreak has halved. Only one-third of schools now claim herd immunity — when 95% or more are up to date on their MMR vaccine — compared to two-thirds a decade ago. Maricopa reflects the statewide trend." https://lnkd.in/gtJQU7Xf

Measles… maybe surviving it only to die later of encephalitis… Approximately 1 of every 1000 patients develops acute encephalitis, which often results in permanent brain damage and is fatal in about 10% of patients. In children with lymphoid malignant diseases, delayed-acute measles encephalitis may develop 1-6 months after the acute infection and is generally fatal. An even rarer complication is SSPE, a degenerative CNS disease that can result from a persistent measles infection. SSPE is characterized by the onset of behavioral and intellectual deterioration and seizures years after an acute infection (the mean incubation period for SSPE is approximately 10.8 years). https://lnkd.in/e7JCdvhn

"It is a game-changing new vaccination programme that will protect thousands of our most vulnerable from getting ill in the first place, or significantly reducing the likelihood of severe infection, keeping people out of hospital and from needing to see a GP, and enabling more people to benefit from NHS service” So does this mean we can expect to see a significant decline in the numbers going into hospital or visiting their GPs, time will tell, I guess ... ??
