Coaching high school basketball has been a journey filled with victories and lessons. By adapting strategies, fostering communication, and believing in the team, we’ve achieved great things. Building a culture of trust and collaboration has allowed my teams to thrive both on and off the court. This trust becomes evident when I see my athletes supporting each other through academic challenges, offering a helping hand to a struggling classmate, or leading their peers with integrity. It is these moments that showcase the true value of what we build together. Success in coaching is measured not only by wins but by the growth and resilience developed in the athletes. Trust and collaboration are pillars of being great leaders, and I see my players embodying these qualities in how they navigate life’s challenges with confidence and empathy. They've learned to uplift others, communicate effectively, and lead by example. These are the qualities that define true champions, not just on the basketball court, but in life. People are motivated by care. ? Author and coach TJ Kostecky knows that when you lead a team, it’s important to show them that you’re invested in them as people. ? As a soccer coach with a career spanning over 30 years at 6 universities, he’s spent a lot of time developing athletic potential. ? But to motivate them, he has to see them beyond being athletes. Coaches are leaders. We have all experienced good and bad leaders. Leaders who think they are motivating by chastising, yelling, cussing, when really they are just killing the morale of the team. Leaders who claim to have rules and consequences but then for a favorite or star player, suddenly those rules don’t apply. This article effectively diagnoses the problem (embarrassing to watch, destroys team chemistry) but provides little guidance for solving. The obvious choice is leave and go elsewhere, but this isn’t always an immediate option. This author rightly advises calling it out, but how does one do so without jeopardizing their own standing? And such individuals are rarely self reflective (and administrators likely to be defensive) so the constructive criticism is likely to go nowhere except putting a target on your own back. There is a balance between maintaining high standards and boosting self-esteem. Sports coaching has so much to teach us about this dynamic. The impact of leadership. I’ve always had a passion to lead. It certainly started with sports first - your peers nominating you captain to represent them and the team is an amazing honor. Whether it was as simple as a high school team or throughout multiple years in college, it was a privilege I didn’t take lightly. However - in the professional realm - you don’t get nominated like that. You’re hired. They didn’t choose you. But the impact you can make can be the same that was represented by Coach Corso’s former players. It’s finding potential in people they didn’t know they had. It’s pushing people just that little bit more to get them to tap into something great. It’s colleague reaching out to you to share the impact you made. Leadership is a privilege - when you lead with people in mind - you can achieve greatness but blaze a trail that impacts people beyond measure.
