Today is National Employee Appreciation Day! Don’t worry - you don’t have to rush out and start scooping up gifts. The best ways to show appreciation are free: ? Get to know your employees on a personal level during one-on-one meetings. Ask them about their families, hobbies, and lives outside of work. ? Connect with them on a shared interest. Do you both love fly fishing? Set aside time to talk about your favorite trips. ? Ask them about their professional goals, and offer ways to help them achieve those goals. Remember, it’s about using the Platinum Rule here, not the Golden Rule. (For a quick refresher: The Platinum Rule says to treat others the way THEY want to be treated. The Golden Rule says to treat others the way YOU want to be treated. See the difference?) Employee Appreciation Day is March 7th! Are you ready? Soon, you’ll see a flood of ideas, merch, gifts, and experiences marketed to you as the perfect way to show your team how much you care. And yes, some of these ideas may be great for your organization. BUT (and this is a big BUT)... True appreciation starts with one thing: knowing how your employees want to be appreciated. ?? Do they value public recognition or prefer a quiet “thank you” one-on-one? ?? Would a team lunch excite them, or does a handwritten note mean more? ?? Do they crave growth opportunities, flexible schedules, or just feeling seen? The only way to find out? Ask them. Simple, direct, and personal. By taking the time to ask your employees what makes them feel appreciated, you’re already showing them you care in a way no generic gift ever could. Appreciation isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept, it’s a conversation. So, as March 7th approaches, include your team in the planning. "I'm passionate about recognizing my team and colleagues, but how do we create a culture of appreciation throughout my organization?" This is what I was asked during a session on appreciation with employees at a company this week. In a nutshell, here is how I answered it. Btw, I'm sharing it with my network in case you are asked this, hopefully helping you not only answer it but create a culture of appreciation at your company. - Educate: The first step is to educate your workforce on why appreciation is important to them, their colleagues and the company. Explain to them what I call the 'superpowers' of appreciation. - Ownership: Explain the importance of getting everyone involved in appreciation, how it is a team sport, and how everyone needs to take responsibility and own it. Explain what I call the 'crowdsourcing approach' to appreciation. - See it. Say it. Appreciate it!: Explain how they can use my mantra of 'See it. Say it. Appreciate it!' to help everyone look for, action and deliver the appreciation feeling. You can read more on this in the blog I share in this post.
