Lebanon is facing an unimaginable humanitarian crisis. Escalated bombardments have left over 11,000 pregnant women in dire circumstances, with 1,300 expected to give birth in the next month amidst widespread devastation. The health system, already strained before, is now on the brink—over 100 healthcare centers and several hospitals have been forced to close. Organizations and agencies such as United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have worked to fill the gap by supporting maternal health services for displaced women across 30 hospitals, covering costs for safe deliveries and emergency obstetric care. In emergencies, women and children are often the most vulnerable, requiring immediate attention to ensure their health and safety. In our policy brief, Women and Girls in Wartime, we have highlighted these challenges and outlined key solutions. PUBLIC HEALTH/HEALTH CARE friends. The situation in Ukraine (over 700 days of being under attack) continues to degrade. Hospitals, schools, clinics destroyed each day. Homes - pulverized. It’s winter there: very very cold. Millions of people (millions!!) displaced. What you can do: contact your congresspersons and ask them to approve funding so Ukrainians can at least defend themselves. Or if this takes too much time, help my organization get humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable: link in first comment. #publichealth #healthcare #ukrainecrisis #humanitarianaid #winterweather #wintersafety #displacement #displaced #refugees #refugeesupport #hospital #clinics #childrenshealth #vulnerable #populationhealth #populationhealthmanagement #peoplefirst

?? #Lebanon is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. With hundreds of civilian casualties, mass displacement, and over a million people forced to flee their homes in Beirut and the south and east of the country, the situation is rapidly deteriorating. ?? The healthcare system, already crippled by years of economic turmoil, is struggling to cope. The St. Antoine Community Health Center in Roueissat, Beirut – supported by GSIF – has become the primary healthcare facility for internally displaced families, providing first aid and urgent medical care that overburdened hospitals can no longer handle. In this critical situation, the Good Shepherd Sisters and healthcare staff remain in position, providing essential relief. As the violence continues to escalate, the number of displaced persons is expected to rise sharply in the coming days. Now more than ever, swift and coordinated action is urgently needed. ?? To learn more about the situation and our intervention, read our article: https://lnkd.in/dUkgPatw #LebanonCrisis #HumanitarianCrisis #StandWithLebanon #GSIF

Brave! Please Read and Repost! Official AVP Statement on Israeli-Iranian Escalation 1 Oct 2024. Good evening friends and colleagues, once again we find stability in Middle East heading in the wrong direction for all. American Voices for Peace (AVP) is urging the US government to take action to halt the escalating war in the Middle East instigated by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. AVP emphasizes that a supermajority of Americans—68%—favor an end to the violence and 61% support a complete arms embargo on Israel, as U.S.-supplied weapons have been used in violations of both American and international laws, targeting civilian populations in Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon. Violence, including genocide accusations subject of a lawsuit brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice, threatens to pull other nations like Yemen and Iran into the conflict. The weak U.S. sanctions imposed on Israeli settlers for their violent acts in the West Bank have only served to document the U.S.’s awareness of these provocations against Palestinians. Netanyahu’s government has been shielded from accountability, with the U.S. enabling its impunity despite overwhelming American public opinion that favors a peaceful resolution. At the United Nations, Netanyahu claimed Israel seeks peace, but the U.S. and Israel were part of the 7% minority opposing a September 18, 2024, UN General Assembly resolution. In contrast, 57 Arab countries pledged to guarantee Israel’s security within the framework of a two-state solution, but the U.S. failed to act on this opportunity. Meanwhile, Israel has engaged in aggressive actions, such as attacking the Iranian Consulate in Damascus and assassinating a Hamas leader on Iranian soil, risking a wider conflict and increasing the chances of U.S. involvement. Iran has shown restraint even after the assassination of the Hamas leader on its soil, holding out hope for peace talks. However, Netanyahu’s government and extremist settlers, with intentions to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque, have disrupted hostage release negotiations and ceasefire efforts, preventing progress toward a two-state solution backed by the U.S. Furthermore, a political rift between U.S. and Israeli policies became evident when Israel officially rejected the two-state solution, a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy. Yet, President Biden has not taken a firm stand to uphold American policy and push for peace. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also been criticized for withholding crucial information from Congress regarding Israel’s misuse of U.S. arms, potentially influencing policy decisions. Blinken’s dual U.S.-Israeli citizenship has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest, leading AVP to argue that dual citizens should not hold such positions of power, as they may compromise American interests in foreign policy. In conclusion, AVP argues that the American public overwhelmingly supports peace, and U.S. foreign policy should reflect this desire.
Ninety-nine US doctors and nurses who treated Palestinians in Gaza during the past year have written a letter to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris about the horrors they saw. These brave and admirable healthcare workers seem to be operating under the mistaken belief that Biden and Harris have a conscience. They don't. In their letter, the healthcare workers state: - "It is likely that the death toll from this conflict is already greater than 118,908, an astonishing 5.4% of Gaza's population" - "Every day I saw babies die. They had been born healthy. Their mothers were so malnourished that they could not breastfeed, and we lacked formula or clean water to feed them, so they starved." - "Gaza was the first time I held a baby's brains in my hand. The first of many." - "I've never seen such horrific injuries, on such a massive scale, with so few resources. Our bombs are cutting down women and children by the thousands. Their mutilated bodies are a monument to cruelty." #Gaza #genocide #genocidejoe #KamalaHarris https://lnkd.in/eTEbg7T5

On World Humanitarian Day, we stand united in our commitment to protect civilians and humanitarians working in conflict zones. As conflicts grow more intense, complex, and prolonged, the targeting of health care, humanitarian workers, and civilians has become an unacceptable norm. This year alone, over 700 attacks on health care have been verified across 13 countries and territories. Health workers, patients, health facilities and supplies must never be attacked and must be actively protected by all parties to a conflict. It's time to stop this normalization. In our region, the widespread insecurity and political instability in Haiti have severely limited access to essential services such as food, water, and health care. PAHO is collaborating with the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) and other partners to mitigate the ongoing strain on the health sector and protect the operational capacity of critical health facilities. https://lnkd.in/eUEYbMfU I also want to share the "Red Book," a crucial guidance framework for medical teams operating in armed conflict and other insecure environments. This document introduces additional verification requirements for teams, ensuring they are prepared and protected while delivering care. I encourage all the emergency medical teams to download and review this essential resource: A guidance document for medical teams responding to health emergencies in armed conflicts and other insecure environments ( https://lnkd.in/eUNAiaGr ) I honor all my colleagues across the Americas and beyond who face enormous challenges providing care in conflict zones and insecure environments. Your courage and dedication are an inspiration and motivate us every day in our work to ensure that everyone can access essential health care during emergencies. #EMTamericas #ActForHumanity #WorldHumanitarianDay #HealthEmergencies #NotATarget

“The health of internally displaced people in Syria: Is the current system fit for purpose?” This was the title of an article by Aula Abbara et al. that delves into the health struggles of over 6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Syria, uncovering significant gaps in the ability of the fragmented health system to meet their needs. This research emphasizes the urgent need for detailed data on health conditions, the importance of considering co-determinants (beyond forced displacement), and healthcare access barriers for IDPs across different Syrian regions. The linke to the article https://lnkd.in/drtbmUDF Last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) published its first-ever Global research agenda on health, migration, and displacement. This agenda aims to guide research efforts to understand and address the health needs of migrants, refugees, and all forcibly displaced populations, shaping responsive policies and practices worldwide. Link: https://lnkd.in/d3RvzXZ8 If you care about improving health for IDPs and other vulnerable individuals in Syria, collaboration is key. By working hand-in-hand across sectors, we can drive change. #IDPs #HealthEquity

Enhancing Health, Safety, and Wellbeing in Conflict-Affected Areas?? The theme of this year’s World Humanitarian Day is #ActForHumanity, an important reminder of how crucial it is to support people affected by conflict. To support humanitarian causes, USAID Quality Healthcare Activity (QHA) is actively working in the post-conflict regions of Amhara and Tigray. Through capacity building and technical assistance, we are making a difference. Over the past year, QHA has been on the front lines, tackling cholera and measles outbreaks. We’ve also been providing crucial support in response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) through three crisis modifiers. Furthermore, QHA has begun the renovation of three health facilities in Tigray. Let's join forces and strengthen humanitarian efforts to create a better world.??
