Delighted to share our recent publication on the evolution of gender-based violence (GBV) coordination in Lebanon's protracted humanitarian emergency, 2012–22. Many thanks to Jennifer Palmer, Mazeda Hossain, and Jinan Usta for their collaboration. GBV is a global health and human rights issue that can be exacerbated in emergencies.?Considered to be a complex and politically sensitive issue in many contexts, GBV is often inadequately addressed during emergencies. Our findings in Lebanon illustrate the transformative potential of the humanitarian response on addressing GBV in the country, facilitated by effective GBV coordination. Such protracted crises present opportunities to expand GBV services, enhance coordination, and advance localisation. However, challenges persist in achieving sustainable and institutionalised GBV coordination and services, including the volatile, restrictive policy context which hindered government ownership, dependence on international funding and multiple compounded emergencies in Lebanon. Globally, we underline the importance of investing in dedicated GBV coordinators and allocating multi-year, flexible GBV funding alongside interagency strategies on GBV risk mitigation and prevention in emergencies.

Mogadishu, 22 October 2024 - KOICA, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Somalia Federal Government announced the launch of a joint project to improve access to quality and integrated life-saving maternal health services, prevent gender-based violence, and engage adolescents and youth affected by the humanitarian crisis in Somalia. This collaborative initiative aims to provide integrated sexual reproductive health, gender based violence, and youth-focused services across Somalia. This project will build resilience among women, girls, and adolescents to withstand the impact of climate change, conflict, and epidemics. It will also enhance youth participation in policy dialogue and strengthen the skills of frontline workers, including midwives, to deliver quality services within the broader humanitarian development peace nexus. As Somalia prepares to channel a new path for development and durable solutions, this project will address the immediate needs and lay the foundation for long-term change to empower women and girls, strengthen communities, and build a healthier, more equitable Somalia. MUST READ: 'The Global health community must call for an immediate ceasefire & unrestricted humanitarian aid in Gaza' Link: https://lnkd.in/eScFtHsd Via BMJ ''The scale of the devastation and humanitarian crisis currently happening in Gaza is undeniable. Tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, including at least 14?000 children. But we’re also witnessing an unprecedented, deliberate, and targeted destruction of Gaza’s healthcare service—and it’s time for more of us from the global health community to speak out. Global health is about recognising how global inequalities in power result in inequity in health. It involves grappling with the brutal consequences of power imbalances and colonisation. So, why hasn’t there been more concerted outrage from global health experts, from racism and decolonisation practitioners, from reproductive health organisations, women’s rights advocates, universities, professional associations, and academic bodies, regarding the annihilation of the Gazan health system?'' On Friday we began telling you about a number of new studies from the ReBUILD team (liminal health systems in Myanmar/Thailand - https://lnkd.in/escMWfca) Today's looks at the role of the diaspora in supporting health system resilience in fragile and shock-prone settings. Health systems in fragile and conflict-affected states are compromised by brain drains of populations and medical talent, lack of infrastructure investment, and overreliance on external aid, amongst many other factors. However, diaspora populations originating from those states may contribute significantly to rebuilding health system capacity and resilience through various engagement pathways, which we believe are under-explored in the published literature.?This study explores how human, financial and social capital from the diaspora can strengthen local health system functioning. There's more on the study and its methodology here. https://lnkd.in/enXDeBW4 Image:?An optometrist examines a man’s eyes in a MAPS health facility in Beqaa, Lebanon. MAPS (Multi-Aid Programs) is a humanitarian, community-based, non-profit organisation focused on refugees and vulnerable populations. Its four programs, one of which is healthcare, seek to empower displaced Syrians, with the majority of programs designed and implemented by Syrian refugees themselves. MAPS is supported through donations from the Syrian diaspora. ???? We are sounding the alarm on the quickly escalating violence in Haiti. The coordinated attacks in Port-au-Prince and the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry have exacerbated an already precarious humanitarian, political and economic situation. Gangs have targeted key infrastructure, leading to the release of thousands of detainees and forcing over 15,000 people to flee the capital in fear of violence, kidnapping or sexual assault. ?? Today, 5.5 million people require humanitarian aid in Haiti, nearly half of the population, and these needs may increase significantly over the coming weeks. ?? Doctors of the World has been in Haiti since 1996, working with the Ministry of Public Health and Population and civil society to strengthen the healthcare system, train health workers, promote sexual and reproductive health rights, provide mental health support to frontline teams, and respond to emergencies such as epidemics and natural disasters. #haiti #ayiti Médecins du Monde Canada

Yemen remains one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. In 2023, a staggering 21.6 million people require some form of humanitarian assistance as 80 percent of the country struggles to put food on the table and access basic services. Eight years of conflict, compounded by economic collapse, natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, have taken an inordinate toll on women and girls. The health system has virtually collapsed cutting their access to life-saving reproductive health services. Today a woman dies during pregnancy and childbirth every two hours from causes which are almost entirely preventable with access to services. In 2023, more than 1.5 million pregnant and breastfeeding women are projected to suffer acute malnutrition – with risks of negative birth outcomes and malnourished infants. So many people in Yemen are in need of humanitarian aid in the best month of year "Ramdan" , especially the displaced families. The most important of these aids and assistance is to feed the poor families, orphans, widows, handicapped, displaced and all who are in need. #humansupportfoundation#Yemen#Taiz#

World Relief's President and CEO Myal Greene co-authored this OpEd emphasizing a recent report from INTEGRAL ALLIANCE partners about neglected crises. In the early 2000s, the world saw the power of collective advocacy and action in the face of HIV, and 24 years later, the investments in PEPFAR and The Global Fund, commitments from public and private partners to make life-saving medications widely available, and quick, responsive action from many implementers and researchers alongside people affected turned the HIV crisis around for the better. Those improvements continue. Will our community now turn attention to: --ending cultural, social, and economic isolation? --addressing climate connections with all our programs? --support for locally-led action? --not tiring of crises that go on longer than a media cycle? https://lnkd.in/ejYqKJbW
