One thing that's helped me in my journey through marketing roles across sports, staffing, education, and tech? Realizing that the purpose of marketing is the same across the board.... ? Great marketing makes sales easier. ? (And yes, that's worded very carefully for a reason.) In sports? Content, PR, social, IRL activations, getting the team out in the community -- that all drives ticket sales, merch sales, etc. There's a reason why trying to get Savannah Bananas tickets is like getting Eras Tour tix. In staffing? Sharing your stories and expertise on the journey building a personal brand and company brand -- that all makes it easier for candidates to find you, and clients to choose you. In education? There's a million stories happening on campus (and from your alumni around the country) every day that could be told thousands of different ways -- the hard work is just finding the right ones that drive enrollment and fundraising. In tech? There's a lot of complex storytelling and thought leadership around how effectively managing technology enables others to do their best work -- and the stories you choose to tell supports your ability to sell in a competitive landscape. So whether it's more inbound leads, warmer outbound interactions, shorter sales cycles, or more repeat/referral business, there are a LOT of different ways marketing can make sales easier. And if you need to make the leap from one industry to another to grow your career? Just remember that marketing and sales are all the same at the core - and that applies to how you market and sell yourself as a job candidate. #Marketing #Sales #CareerDevelopment

Is having a degree still necessary for success, or are skills and experience enough? - At Vision Advertising, we don’t require a college degree during the application process. We believe that this requirement can often be a barrier to entry. If you have a degree, that’s great! But if you don’t, that’s equally great! This is especially true in the marketing field. (If you're a brain surgeon, please study up on that!) What truly matters is the skills you bring to the table and your real-world experience. Always appreciate these insights from Brooke Kruger; and one of the reasons she is one of the best in the business. This point especially resonated: "What a comms leader was responsible for years?ago is not the same today. The function is always expanding to cover everything from narrative building, media relations, content creation and beyond." The day to day for comms has changed dramatically in the 20 years I've worked in this function; even my own role now includes Brand Marketing. But what hasn't changed and why I love working in this field is the way that comms continues to serve as sounding board, connective tissue with marketing and trusted advisor on complex issues impacting the business.
This Spring and Summer I have had the chance to speak to top comms professionals at events in NYC, SF and Seattle with Mixing Board and Shallot Communications.
