I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Sally Marshall from Radio ECU to discuss the impact of excess screen time on children's physical health. Here are some key points from our conversation: ?? Physical Health Decline: Excessive screen time is leading to a loss of fitness, strength, flexibility, and coordination in children. This also impacts their confidence in their bodies and their interactions with the world. ?? Common Issues: We're seeing issues typically found in adults now appearing in children—headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, sore eyes, lower back pain, sleep problems, mood swings, and even carpal tunnel syndrome from gaming. ?? Long-term Impacts: The long-term effects of poor posture from screen use include the loss of natural neck curves and the development of bone spurs. These can lead to chronic pain and limited mobility. ?? Overuse Injuries: Children are at risk of developing serious overuse injuries that can cause permanent pain and limit their future activities and career choices. ?? New Program Development: We are developing a workshop for parents and teachers to educate them about these risks and provide practical solutions, including muscle relaxation exercises and ergonomic setups for laptops. ?? Need for Movement: We ask parents to encourage children to move more, play more, and take physical risks in safe environments, which is crucial for their physical and mental development. We can’t ignore the parents who have already handed over phones. There’s so much fear mongering, worse, targeting of parents who allow their kids phones. It’s an isolating feeling. When a kiddo is unable to move on their own, it can affect their overall body functions and their ability to think things through and make a plan. It can also affect their coordination and even body position while sitting or standing. Movement stimulates the brain development in kiddos necessary for learning about the world around them. Their brains are like sponges soaking up information, the brain actually doubles in size in the first year of infancy. Take your kiddo outside to move around regularly, as movement outside can be even more beneficial. Activities that provide movement outdoors in wide open spaces can boost a kiddos awareness of space. Exposure to this on a regular basis will improve their balance and observation skills as well. However, if your kiddo's development is hampered by an injury or illness, they may not enjoy the same freedom of movement as other kids. Today is World Sight Day, a time to reflect on the importance of eye health, especially for our children. With screen time at an all-time high, it's crucial we take steps to protect their vision. Excessive time spent staring at screens is contributing to a rise in myopia, especially among young children. But there’s hope! By simply encouraging more outdoor play and being mindful of screen use, we can take big steps towards safeguarding our children's eyesight. As Daniel Hardiman-McCartney, MBE FCOptom, reminds us: “This World Sight Day, let's focus on our children's eyes and their future! As parents, we all want to give our kids the best start in life, including protecting their vision. Did you know that simply cutting back on screen time and encouraging outdoor play can help prevent short-sightedness (myopia) in kids? This is especially crucial up to age twelve. While two hours outdoors daily is ideal, even 40 minutes can make a real difference—not just for their eyes, but for their overall health and mental well-being. “Too often, children don’t get their first eye examination until they’re already struggling in school, feeling clumsy, or dealing with headaches. Regular eye exams can catch problems early, before they start to impact learning. And if you wear glasses, it’s even more important to have your child's eyes checked regularly. “When it comes to screen time, remind your kids to follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and blink! I was giving today a keynote to parents of Benjamin Franklin school in Barcelona, and tried to undo some of the myths that are inundating the media about children and screens. One such myth is that parents need to worry about screen-time. This leads to endless battles over how much time children should spend online, which worsens the relationships and just strengthens unhealthy behaviours, as kids become more secretive about it. A much better strategy is to focus on what the screen-time REPLACES, and aim to increase useful behaviour, rather than resisting unhealthy one (works for adults, too). Pick your fights. Fight for your child moving more, having better sleep, being able to manage their own emotions and be with hard feelings - and screen-time will become far less of an issue in your family. #screentime #parenting #mentalhealth #consciouslydigital
