In our latest Fence Post discussion, we invited a panel of experts to discuss how Arizona’s developers, civic groups, and municipalities are collaborating to address air quality challenges. Arizona faces EPA regulations on air quality and the possible impending designation of Maricopa County as a “serious non-attainment” area for ozone. However, many of the particles in our air don't originate in our state, as approximately 80% of those particles come from external sources. The discussion highlighted the fact that local, state and federal officials, as well as the private sector, are working together to find answers that support Arizona’s economic growth while also protecting our air quality, showing a strong commitment to sustainable solutions. Yes. Efficient water use and understanding water footprint is an overlooked issues. Implementing Roof Top Rain Water Harvesting is the best way to address domestic consumption and farming needs. The desert community of Barmer successfully managed their water requirements for 40 Ber plants, 5 goats, and a family of 6 by enhancing their rainwater-harvesting structure. With a capacity of 70,000 litres, they were able to meet their water needs for 7-8 months in a year. We should explore similar models for rural and urban communities to reduce the water footprint in the country.

To counter climate change-related flooding, communities across Minnesota get creative | Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (state.mn.us) Understanding climate resilience means first understanding what effects climate change will have on Minnesota. While winters have been warming here faster than the summers, the summers have been getting wetter. At the most basic level, according to Linnea Savereide, an engineer in the MPCA’s stormwater section, “we’re expecting to see storms get more intense, which means more water that will come in a shorter amount of time which can overwhelm stormwater systems.” With help from MPCA climate resilience grants, cities and watershed districts find solutions tailored to their needs.
