Ever wonder what happens when a Hot Dip Galvanized steel structure gets nicked or damaged on site? ???? ?? Small damages during cutting, welding, transport, or erection? No panic! Thanks to zinc's sacrificial action, minor flaws (up to 5mm) often self-heal, maintaining the integrity of the steel. ???? But, what if you want to restore that flawless look? Here's the quick fix: 1?? Wire-brush the area 2?? Apply zinc-rich primer (90% zinc) for a thick, protective layer – just like the original coating! 3?? For that perfect color match, top it off with a 'bright galvanizing spray.' Need a more precise fix? Try these: ?? Heat the area with a blowtorch to 300°C and apply a special zinc alloy rod. ????? ?? Grit-blast to Sa3 and zinc spray for equivalent corrosion protection. ????? Remember, maintaining the quality and aesthetics of your structure is key. For detailed guidance, refer to IS EN/ISO 1461 on coating thickness and renovation procedures. ???? ------------------- Are you working on a project and need superior corrosion protection? ?? ?? Wondering what surface coating you can apply to your mild steel componentry? Let us help! Mild Steel components might look lovely and shiny immediately post machining, however - mild steel can tend to rust easily. So to keep your components looking good, what are your best options? ???? ? Zinc Plating involves applying a thin layer of zinc metal to the surface of a component through electrical deposition. Zinc plating can be applied in varying finishes, from a zinc yellow look to a zinc trivalent blue. Zinc can be applied in varying thicknesses and assists in preventing rust and maintaining surface finishes. ?? Galvanising involves coating the mild steel with a zinc layer through a dipping process offering enhanced protection against rust and corrosion. Galvanising tends to be a much thicker coating, and in turn offers up to 5 times the rust protection than zinc. ?? Painting involves applying a coat of paint over the steel to offer barrier protection from atmospheric elements. Painting often tends to be an aesthetic fix only, and doesn't generally provide long lasting protection from rust and corrosion. ?? Powder Coating is the application of dry powder and curing by heating to make a layer highly resistant to corrosion and wear. Powder coating offers a similar finish to painting in offering a variety of colours, however tends to have better protective properties. ??♂? Did you know, as part of our contract manufacturing service, Alasco Engineering can take care of your mild steel surface coating needs - delivering you a finished product, ready to use! ?? #Engineering #fabrication #surfacecoat #surface #coating #plate #galvanise #paint #powdercoat #rust #corrosion #resistant #expert #precision #australianmanufacturing

Want a great way to mess up a coating or lining? Weld on an already coated or lined structure. The heat created from welding is roughly 10,000?F. Most epoxy coatings and linings only go to about 350?F. What can we do to solve this problem if we need to weld? 1. Do any and all welding before coating. Super simple, not always possible. —> remove the problem in the first place 2. If we need to place a steel plate… —> we can fix the steel plate to the structure with epoxy adhesives 3. If we need to weld to strengthen the structure… —> original design strength may be with an epoxy or urethane composite system —> use carbon fiber or glass fiber fabrics with excellent strength properties Each case is different. Start here to increase your chances of success.

? Painting Steel & Iron Right: Spec it Out! #CivilEngineers #Construction Here's a breakdown for specifying paint on steelwork in your next project: Surface Preparation: Cleaning: Detail required cleaning methods (sandblasting, power tools) to remove rust, dirt, & oil. Abrasive Profile: Specify the desired surface roughness for optimal paint adhesion (e.g., SSPC-SP5 - White Metal Blast Cleaning) Paint System: Primer: Specify paint type (e.g., zinc-rich epoxy primer) & minimum dry film thickness (DFT) for corrosion protection. Intermediate Coat (Optional): Consider including an intermediate coat for additional protection in harsh environments. Finish Coat: Define desired color, sheen level, and DFT for aesthetics & weather resistance. Application: Environmental Conditions: Specify acceptable temperature & humidity ranges for proper paint application. Number of Coats: Mention the required number of paint coats for each layer (primer, intermediate, finish). Inspection: Include quality control procedures to ensure proper paint application & thickness. Bonus Tip: Reference industry standards like SSPC (Steel Structures Painting Council) for detailed specifications. Clear specs = accurate estimates & a beautiful, protected structure! #painting #constructionspecs

Do you know what steel “blowout” is? It's a common fabrication issue we come across and understanding it can help you achieve better results in your projects. ? When two pieces of steel are stitch welded together, gaps are often left between each weld. During the steel cleaning process (pickling), liquid seeps into these tight cavities but can't clean the surfaces thoroughly. When the steel hits the 450°C molten zinc bath, contaminants are forced out at high pressure, causing a "blowout." Whilst it’s quite a fun spectacle, this can leave the tightly welded surfaces and surrounding areas of the steel partially ungalvanized. The solution? Allow a 2mm gap when fabricating your steel sections. This small adjustment ensures thorough cleaning and complete galvanizing of all surfaces, eliminating the need for post-sealing and preventing rust in those vulnerable areas. Have questions? When designing steel to steel connections, it’s essential to look beyond just the connecting elements like welds, bolts, and plates. The structural members involved in force transfer through the connection also need careful attention. For instance, in a full-depth end plate connection, whether connecting a beam to a column flange, column web, beam web, or hollow section wall, certain checks are critical. It’s recommended to ensure the connection meets both strength and rotational requirements for nominally pinned connections. Additionally, for S275 fittings, maintaining a maximum plate thickness of 12mm is crucial to satisfy rotational demands. Keeping these factors in mind helps ensure reliable designs.

Usability of ?????????????? ???????????????????? for Expansion Joints. The pipeline is often coated for the protection of the steel parts. Similarly, #coating or painting can also be applied to the Expansion Joints. The stainless-steel parts as a standard are not coated or primed but can be upon a request or according to the requirement. In most situations, the carbon steel parts of the Expansion Joint are coated with a coating system similar to the adjacent piping. Normally, painting bellows is not recommended because the normal #oxide layer (protection layer) that regenerates in stainless steel after 24 hours is not granted. Passivation & pickling is not recommended due to the acids used and the shape/grooves in Expansion Joints. ??However, the coating for the Expansion Joint is often specified in the RFQ to ensure it suits the application. Another option is to specify that the Expansion Joint should be coated after installation in the pipe system. At Belman, we are experienced in designing Expansion Joints with any coating as per the client requirement and our production premises equipped with separate paint cabinet facility that enhance our ability in customized solutions #surfaceprotection
