Great article in Web In Travel by Timothy O'Neil-Dunne on the Rail vs Air debate. Rail being a viable, let alone better, alternative on many routes is surely too idealistic with the current infrastructures in place? Even with the considerations Timothy sets out can anyone see this happening soon, and where? NB I'd like to be optimistic but I'm just a realist - there has to be a viable alternative to air if the travel industry is ever to make a meaningful environment impact but I'm struggling to see where it's coming from. It is a great article! Rail is the future if it can be all electric, that is where cars are heading so anything that reduces the use of fossil fuels has to be a step in the right direction…environmentally…
Well done Timothy O'Neil-Dunne great article ??! I'm a huge rail fan?? , but unfortunately the UK network is sadly lacking, in my last 3 trips I have encountered a lost driver, broken AC and miscommunication of how a train will divide at particular station! There are many challenges!
Going down this path means the gradual end of all airline travel, and travel in general. If passengers don't have a right to travel on airplanes for journeys of less than 500 km for environmental reasons, they don't have a right to travel at all. Think I'm exaggerating. I've read plenty of articles from think tanks where it's proposed that each person should only be allowed to fly a limited distance per year, or per every three years. That's where this thinking leads. Let's stop this insanity.
