Reproductive Justice is a topic we must address with care in the CHI and CSSW communities. We* are organizing a speculative design jam workshop focused "Caring for Reproductive Justice"-- taking place in-person and online during #CSCW2024. There is still time to Submit a 1-3 page provocation or position paper by August 20 that discusses a particular challenge, experience, or gap they have encountered in their work on reproductive justice. This one-day hybrid workshop will facilitate a design jam speculating on?design and anti-design?approaches that can support reproductive justice. The jam will mainly focus on unique challenges and tensions arising from adversity.?Adversity?includes tangible and perceived hostilities spanning the national, local, and private spheres. Examples could include legal barriers, social stigmatization, precarious or violent domestic environments, and more. Until we intimately understand our history, the healthy and visionary future we all seek will stay out reach. As we work towards securing reproductive health, rights, and justice, we must center the lived experiences of those closest to the issue(s). That means recognizing the long and painful history of policing the reproductive lives and autonomy of Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous people as well as the ongoing resistance of those same communities. ? From unethical gynecological experiments carried out on enslaved women …? ? To medical professionals continuing to perform sterilizations without Black women’s consent or knowledge … ? To maternal health disparities that cause Black women to die from pregnancy-related complications at 3x the rates of white women … It’s clear we're at a critical inflection point with the upcoming election.?Our advocacy work must include - but cannot be limited to - safe and legal abortion. The Reproductive Justice (RJ) framework fills the gaps of reproductive health and rights in meeting the needs of Black communities. This framework has grown into a powerful movement with direct impact on the 2024 election. Everyone has a role in developing the scaffolding and support for the RJ movement. Let’s continue to honor our ancestors’ resistance and resilience. What's your role? [We are working to expand the understanding about the RJ movement in the weeks leading up to the election. Follow along at #PastPresentFutureofRJ and share widely!] #ReproductiveJustice #BlackLeadership #2024Election #HumanRights

?? Elevating the Fight for Reproductive Freedom in Texas! ?? In January, I proudly accepted the role of Executive Director at Avow, an unapologetic Texas abortion advocacy organization. As a native Texan, returning home to this site of freedom fills me with both thrill and honor. Stepping into this role, I carry a deep sense of responsibility rooted in the principles of Black feminist leadership, energized and prepared for the deep relationship building that underpins our work. Texas needs our attention now more than ever! The current trajectory of our state legislature does not reflect the views and needs of Texans. Any attempt to restrict abortion, especially measures that criminalize it, perpetuates state-sanctioned violence. Abortion is a vital aspect of healthcare that contributes to our personal freedom. To learn more about how Avow leads the fight for reproductive freedoms in Texas, check out this announcement: https://lnkd.in/eYCyc8dg As a new Executive leader, I draw inspiration from one of my Black Feminist North Stars, Ancestor Septima Poinsette Clark, who wisely said: "The fight for justice is a long journey, and we must continually renew our commitment to the struggle." In these challenging times, I urge each of you to find a resource, a comrade, or a practice that renews your commitment to principled struggle. While I settle into this role, I implore each of you to keep a watchful eye on Texas. There's important work ahead of us, and together, we can build people power that contests these political conditions! Let's rise to the occasion and recommit to our pursuit of justice. #ReproductiveFreedom #BlackFeministLeadership #TexasAbortionAdvocacy #PrincipledStruggle

When discussing human rights and reproductive justice, it's about empowering individuals with options. As Loretta J Ross said, “A person can’t fight for their human rights if they don’t know they have them. They got to know they have options beyond the deadly and dangerous ones.” Reproductive justice means being free to make informed choices about our bodies without discrimination, coercion, or violence. It's a fundamental aspect of our right to life, health, privacy, and education.? Woodhull continues the fight for reproductive justice, a fundamental human right. When we have reproductive justice, we have reproductive freedom. #reproductivefreedom #reproductiverights #reproductivejustice #equalrights #humanrights #sexualfreedom #freedomtochoose #freeexpression
