How can design thinking methods increase creative and robustly informed mental health policymaking? Sarah Walker, director of the?UW CoLab for Community & Behavioral Health Policy, urges governments toward a greater balance in values and knowledge when designing mental health policy for communities. “Adequately addressing the local mental health needs of states, counties, and cities requires that governments and their partner organizations develop three interrelated competencies: 1?? The ability to integrate research evidence with local information 2?? The ability to design solutions from the ground up to respond to local values 3?? The ability to maintain trust and relationships within a political network over time.” Learn more about Dr. Walker’s solutions: https://lnkd.in/euPfq5AU #mentalhealth #government #socialservices #policymaking #designthinking

Today, members of the community gathered to declare May 2024 as Mental Health Month. The proclamation, signed by Pulaski County Government, The City of Somerset, and the Pulaski County Court of Justice, reads as follows. MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS Mental Health Month 2024 WHEREAS, the area that someone lives in plays a significant role in their overall health and well-being; and WHEREAS, surroundings can impact if, how, and when a person's needs are met, which in turn affects mental health; and WHEREAS, having safe, stable, and healthy home conditions set the foundation for achieving and maintaining good mental health; and WHEREAS, with early and effective interventions, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives; and WHEREAS, each business, school, government agency, health care provider, organization, and citizen share the burden of mental health problems and has a responsibility to promote mental wellness and support prevention efforts. THEREFORE, We do hereby proclaim May 2024 as Mental Health Month in Somerset and Pulaski County. As elected community officials we also call upon the citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, and schools in Somerset, Pulaski County to recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health, the steps our citizens can take to protect their mental health, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental health conditions. “Everything is connected,” said Pulaski County Judge Executive Marshall Todd. “When I recently attended the grand opening of the PCDC Workforce and Re-Entry Center, it wasn’t lost on me that a good deal of the issues that put our inmates in jail can be traced back to various mental health issues. We need to acknowledge that and work to identify those issues and make it easier for individuals suffering from mental illness to get the help they need.” #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthishealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthmonth

???We’re at a critical juncture when it comes to mental health. With the General Election nearing and the mental health of our nation deteriorating generally and alarmingly amongst our young people, the time to act and speak up is now. This election presents a pivotal opportunity for political parties to demonstrate their commitment to reversing this trend and building a #MentallyHealthierNation. The Centre for Mental Health has outlined 3 key themes for us to focus on to get there: ?? Prevention: Tackling the root causes of mental ill health, where prevention is not just better but essential. ?? Equality: Eradicating disparities to ensure everyone, irrespective of their background, has equal footing in accessing mental health support. ?? Support: Streamlining and strengthening the framework of mental health services for timely and community-centered care. The path to a #MentallyHealthierNation is paved with informed choices and collective action. Let's use this election to champion mental health, pushing it to the top of our nation's agenda. Share their report and summary to show your support! https://lnkd.in/eNQ9qgb8 #GeneralElection #MentalHealthAwareness #PublicHealthPolicy #YouthMentalHealth #Education

Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year’s focus is the vital connection between mental health and work. People’s mental health is supported by key workplace policies like paid leave, a living wage, and coverage of mental health care. It’s also important to think about state and local policies that affect how people are able to show up at work. For example, we know that access to safe, affordable housing affects mental health; workforce policies can help expand the pool of behavioral health providers; education policies affect employee’s children; and policies can be enacted to improve income security. Our collection of resources to support children’s mental health provides information and policy solutions in these areas. While these resources are framed specifically to address the needs of children, the policies, if implemented, can also support children’s parents and guardians in the workforce. Employers can be key supporters of these policies in their communities. Four mental health advocates discussed together the state of mental health in Minnesota — past, present, and future. Via Minnesota Women's Press https://lnkd.in/g8nYeU84 Important Insights from Mental Health Advocates in Minnesota! In a recent conversation, leading advocates shared their perspectives on the evolving landscape of mental health care in Minnesota. They discussed the systemic challenges we face, the strides we've made, and the road ahead. Key takeaways: The mental health system in Minnesota is still under construction, with a shift from institutional to community-based care needed. Increased awareness of diverse needs, especially among BIPOC and rural communities, highlights the gaps that must be addressed. Advocates emphasized the importance of culturally responsive services and the need for better workforce representation. As we continue to advocate for a more inclusive and effective mental health system, let’s envision a future where everyone has access to the care they need! ???? Sue Abderholden, NAMI Minnesota executive director: We didn’t have a mental health system; we still don’t. It’s not broken — it was never built. Most [mental health] institutions closed by 1980. The biggest shift we saw was that you used to have to go to the county to get services, and when they ran out of money, you were put on a waiting list. Around 2006 and 2007, a lot of services moved to Medicaid and Minnesota Care, so [mental health care] became viewed as part of the health care system. #MentalHealthAdvocates #MinnesotaMentalHealth #CommunityCare #BIPOCmentalhealth #CulturallyResponsive #WorkforceRepresentation #InclusiveMentalHealth #EffectiveCare #MentalHealthAwareness
