We are grateful for the incredible turnout and support at our recent Black and Brown Birthing Summit. This groundbreaking pre-conference training and two-day Summit lead by Wilder African American Babies Coalition & Projects celebrates, empowers, and elevates the voices and experiences of Black and Brown birthing individuals. Our sessions delved into critical topics surrounding women, babies, and families afflicted by current birthing crises, ranging from stimulating panel discussions to engaging workshops. Reproductive Rights vs Reproductive Justice These terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. I spoke with an audience of advocates and funders in Northern California aiming to facilitate a shift in the understanding of what access to abortion means to communities already struggling to make ends meet and who regularly face barriers to health care in general. The status quo reproductive rights movement and emphasis on "choices" erases the lived experiences of oppressed people where choices don't matter without the ability to execute once a decision is made. Reproductive justice takes the next step in analyzing the conditions of our communities and our government to meet the needs of individuals and families wherever they are in their reproductive journeys. It takes us away from a singular focus on abortion and allows for intersectional advocacy and movement building. At a recent event to launch Tides Foundation’s Just Health Fund,?DeShawn Taylor, MD?spoke about what it means to provide care through a reproductive justice lens: “It’s centering the most marginalized people—people of color, people struggling to make ends meet, Black people, Indigenous people, immigrants, disabled people, queer, lesbian, nonbinary, trans, people in rural areas—but also giving them the tools that they need to be their own advocates and truly participate in their care, understanding that they are the moral authorities over their lives.”

The current environment feels like a giant step back for the strides of progress we’ve seen to create a more equitable world. From the attacks on the right to protest in states like Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi; the loss of reproductive rights in Arizona; anti-CRT/DEI movements in over 18 states; and the recent silencing of students and educators organizing across the country - so much of what is happening in our country is interconnected… and unraveling. It’s terrifying - but something we heard Noura Erakat, a brilliant Palestinian-American activist and scholar, say gives us hope: “justice will come through people.” We believe that solidarity and collective action are a lot stronger than the fear-mongering that our political party leaders use to wield power.? Our CEO and our Chief of Community, Equity, and Inclusion share their insight on the Community Connection show on Radio One's AM 1310 'The Light": ??"We've gone backwards. After the George Floyd murder, people were heard and seen more loudly and more open to having the conversations about racism. But I think there has been a shift. It seems it's not even okay to talk about race equity work anymore. We're losing roles in DEI.
