Are streamers not just recreating the cable package? A federal judge recently blocked the launch of Venu Sports — a joint venture by Warner Bros. Discovery, The Walt Disney Company, and Fox Corporation —following a legal challenge by Fubo. I'm not sure that Venu is anything other than a new type cable package though? The question surely should be...does this new type of bundle really give consumers the choice they desire? For some people, the Venu bundle will be perfect, for others it will leave them paying for content they simply don’t watch. So a combination of Venu type packages and mix and match a la carte offerings is surely what is required – i.e. complete choice. In the meantime however we wait to see how the courts ruling impacts consumer choice. This is fascinating. As far as I can tell, Netflix is not an 'official' partner of the National Football League (NFL), but rather working with NFL Films and Omaha Productions on this effort and 'Quarterback' previously. Which means Netflix is leveraging the power of the NFL seemingly without having to pay their significant rights fees. Netflix might be one of the few properties that offers enough value in their own platform that the NFL will approve this without the formal co-brand. Live broadcasts are a different animal but this is a remarkable strategy from a large media company to create a different, and less expensive access point into America's favorite game. #sponsorship #media #sportsmarketing #sportsbiz
