?????? The G?vle Goat: Sweden’s beloved (and often ill-fated) Yule goat tradition. Every holiday season since 1966, the city of G?vle, Sweden, has erected a giant Yule goat made of straw, standing proudly in the town square. This festive symbol, called the G?vle Goat, was inspired by the traditional Swedish Yule goat, a Scandinavian and Northern European symbol for Christmas and the Yule winter festival. The G?vle Goat has become famous not only for its impressive size, but also for its history of repeated arson. Despite security measures, the goat has been destroyed or damaged in more years than not, often by fire. Even without human intervention, the goat does not always survive; in 2023, it was severely pecked at for grain by jackdaws – a type of bird – due to the straw used to construct the goat containing a higher than usual amount of seeds.
