This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Wide Angle Youth Media (WAYM)as part of the Community Impact Internship Program (CIIP) through the Center for Social Concern, Johns Hopkins University. The CIIP is a competitive, paid summer internship that pairs JHU undergraduate students with nonprofit organizations and government agencies and offers an intensive, cohort-based learning environment. With this experience, I was paired with WAYM–a remarkable organization that amplifies the voices of Baltimore youth–fostering creativity and confidence to help students navigate school, career, and life through engagement in media arts including photography, videography, claymation, animation, and design. During my time at WAYM, I was afforded the chance to engage with the Baltimore community meaningfully by accompanying my supervisor, Jake Saltzberg, to various tabling events throughout the city including one on Capitol Hill through the National AfterSchool Association (NAA).? It was an honor to be part of an event where Senator Bernie Sanders spoke about the positive impact of afterschool programs for youth and their public health benefits. A specific highlight of my work was witnessing the art of WAYM’s talented MediaWorks students and being inspired by them to improve my skills in creative media. In this venture, I wanted to thank my coworkers and supervisors Darian Jones and Beth Holladay at WAYM who fostered my photography, editing, and Photoshop development. In a final acknowledgment, I wanted to thank Michael Rush, CIIP, and The Johns Hopkins Center for Social Concern for allowing me to be in the community and spend my first summer in Baltimore.
